Mandalay to Bangkok flight guide
Myanmar Airways International flies nonstop from Mandalay International Airport (MDL) to Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Bangkok, the only direct link between upper Myanmar and Thailand. The 1,024 km flight takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. It carries tourists finishing a trip through Mandalay and Bagan, students, traders and residents connecting to the wider world.
Myanmar Airways International is a full-service airline, so a checked bag and a meal are normally in the economy fare. The allowance varies with the fare type and is shown on your booking. As the only carrier on the route, MAI fills up quickly before Thai and Myanmar holidays.
Mandalay International Airport is at Tada-U, roughly 45 km south of the city. Allow around an hour by road, more in the evening, and agree the taxi fare before you set off. Travellers who entered Myanmar on a tourist eVisa should note that the visa covers a single entry and up to 28 days from arrival, so leaving after that date is an overstay.
Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before you fly. It is free on tdac.immigration.go.th, opens three days before arrival and applies to every non-Thai passenger, with or without a visa.
Thailand's visa rules changed on 15 September 2026, when a 30-day exemption for 60 countries and territories replaced the 60-day scheme. Myanmar was not named in the announcement, so Myanmar citizens and other travellers unsure of their category should check the Thai e-Visa portal before booking. Our Thailand visa page covers the main options.
Suvarnabhumi lies about 25 km east of central Bangkok. The Airport Rail Link runs to Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes and meets the BTS Skytrain; Makkasan station links to the MRT Blue Line. Metered taxis and Grab wait outside arrivals.
For the old city, the S1 bus runs from the airport to Sanam Luang between 06:00 and 17:00 for 60 baht. Anyone with a low-cost onward flight from Don Mueang can take minibus 555 between the two airports for up to 60 baht.
Set your watch forward 30 minutes on landing: Myanmar is UTC+6:30 and Thailand UTC+7, and neither changes its clocks.
The Dhaka flights on Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways leave from Suvarnabhumi, so a connection to South Asia stays in one airport (see Bangkok to Dhaka flights). Long-haul flights to Europe and the Gulf leave from the same terminal.
A connecting flight can board at SAT-1, the satellite concourse with 28 gates linked to the main building by an automated train through a tunnel of about one kilometre. The ride takes about three minutes including the wait. Heading for the beach? Bus 389 runs from Exit 8 on the first floor to Pattaya between 10:00 and 18:00 for 130 baht.
