Bangkok to Mandalay flight guide
Myanmar Airways International (MAI) is the only airline flying nonstop from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Bangkok to Mandalay International Airport (MDL) in upper Myanmar. The 1,024 km flight takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. It suits visitors heading for Mandalay's monasteries and royal palace and for business travellers and families with ties to the region.
MAI is a full-service carrier, so economy fares normally include a checked bag and a meal. The exact allowance depends on the fare type and is printed on your booking. With one airline on the route, seats sell out around Thingyan in April, so book early for that week.
All Mandalay flights leave from Suvarnabhumi, about 25 km east of central Bangkok. The Airport Rail Link brings you from Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes. Inside, some gates are in the SAT-1 satellite concourse, linked to the main terminal by an automated train through a tunnel of about one kilometre; the ride, waiting included, takes about three minutes, but leave extra time if your boarding pass shows an S gate.
Most visitors need a tourist eVisa, applied for on the official Myanmar eVisa site. It allows a single entry and a stay of up to 28 days from arrival, and Mandalay International Airport is one of the permitted entry points. Processing takes at least three working days. The approval letter is valid for 90 days from issue, and entry is refused if it has expired.
Officials ask for a passport valid for at least six months, a return ticket and a hotel booking, and tourists must stay in registered hotels, guesthouses or similar licensed accommodation. Fees are not refunded.
Yangon International Airport and Nay Pyi Taw International Airport are also listed eVisa entry points, so travellers planning to fly in to one city and out of another should confirm the exit arrangements when they apply. Because the eVisa is single entry, a side trip out of Myanmar ends it, and a return needs a fresh application.
Mandalay International Airport is at Tada-U, roughly 45 km south of the city. Allow about an hour by taxi to central Mandalay, and arrange a hotel pickup if you land after dark.
Myanmar's situation has been unsettled since 2021, and parts of the country are affected by conflict. Read your government's travel advice and confirm the current entry rules before buying a ticket, as both can change at short notice.
Myanmar runs on UTC+6:30, half an hour behind Thailand, and neither country uses daylight saving. Travellers from South Asia can fly into Suvarnabhumi on Biman, US-Bangla or Thai Airways (see Dhaka to Bangkok flights) and connect at the same airport. On separate tickets you clear Thai immigration, collect your bag and check in again, so you need permission to enter Thailand and a completed Thailand Digital Arrival Card.
The card is free on tdac.immigration.go.th and opens three days before arrival. Passengers coming from a low-cost flight into Don Mueang can reach Suvarnabhumi on minibus 555, which runs between the two airports from 06:30 to 20:00 for up to 60 baht; leave a generous margin, as the ride crosses the whole city.
