Nan to Bangkok flight guide
Both airlines fly from Nan Nakhon Airport (NNT) to Bangkok, and both land at Don Mueang (DMK). The 545 km flight takes about 1 hour 10 minutes, compared with a long day or an overnight ride on the bus.
Nan's airport is about 3 km north of the old town on Route 1080, five to ten minutes by taxi. That short hop is the easy part. If you are coming back from Bo Kluea, Doi Phu Kha or Pua, the mountain roads are slow, and a morning departure is hard to make from the hills; plenty of travellers spend the last night in town instead.
The airport opens about 06:00 and closes around 20:00, so overnight waits are not possible. Low-cost airlines close check-in 60 minutes before departure, and weekend and holiday flights fill up, so aim to arrive 90 minutes ahead. Food in the terminal is very limited; there is an ATM and first aid.
Both airlines run Don Mueang flights, with Thai AirAsia usually offering more departures. Compare totals with baggage included: Thai AirAsia's cheapest fares cover a cabin bag only, and Nok Air's fare types include different allowances.
Arrivals come into Terminal 2 at Don Mueang International Airport, about 24 km from central Bangkok. The SRT Red Line, across the footbridge, is the most reliable choice when traffic is heavy and links with the MRT Blue Line at Krung Thep Aphiwat. The A1 to A4 airport buses are the cheapest direct rides, and Grab and metered taxis are available around the clock.
Connecting to an international flight? Don Mueang Terminal 1 is a walk away along the indoor link, but if you are flying from Suvarnabhumi you need the free shuttle bus, available with an onward ticket, or a taxi across the city. On separate tickets, leave at least three hours.
Visiting in the cool season? Weekends from December to February see Thai visitors heading home from the north, and return flights sell out first. Book both directions together.
The terminal at NNT replaced an older building in 2014 and reused the runway already there. Its formal opening, attended by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, was on 15 February 2015.
