Phitsanulok to Bangkok flight guide
The flight from Phitsanulok (PHS) to Bangkok is one of the shortest in the Don Mueang network: about 320 km and roughly 50 minutes in the air. Both airlines fly it nonstop to Don Mueang (DMK). Listings disagree on whether Nok Air still flies it, so check Nok Air's own timetable.
A lot of passengers on these flights have spent a day or two at Sukhothai, and the return is easy to plan backwards. The historical park is about 58 km from Phitsanulok, roughly an hour by road. A car with driver can take you straight from the ruins to the terminal; by bus, you arrive at Phitsanulok's city bus terminal and need a taxi or Grab for the last stretch to the airport.
Phitsanulok Airport lies about 5 km south of the centre, 10 to 15 minutes by car from Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat. The terminal is small and closes overnight, with a café and snack area but no confirmed lounge. Both airlines close check-in well before departure, typically 45 to 60 minutes ahead, so 90 minutes is a comfortable margin. Military aircraft use the same runway; keep cameras away from them.
Basic fares on Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air carry a cabin bag only. Phitsanulok's markets and Sukhothai's shops can add weight quickly, so if you need a checked bag, buy it online before you reach the counter.
You arrive at Terminal 2 of Don Mueang International Airport. The Red Line station is across a covered footbridge; trains reach Krung Thep Aphiwat in about 20 minutes, and the MRT Blue Line runs on from there. Airport bus A3 heads to Pratunam, Ratchaprasong and Lumphini Park, and A4 to Khao San Road; metered taxis queue outside Gate 8 on the arrivals level.
For an international departure from Suvarnabhumi, remember that Phitsanulok flights only go to Don Mueang. The free shuttle between the airports runs from about 05:00 to midnight for passengers with an onward ticket, and the ride often takes over an hour. Many travellers find a night in Bangkok between the two flights less stressful.
Phitsanulok Airport (PHS) is a civil terminal on a Royal Thai Air Force airfield, run by Thailand's Department of Airports. It opened in 1941 and has a single 3,000 m runway. In 2025 it handled 517,449 passengers, still below the 689,392 counted in 2019.
Look out of the window while you taxi: two retired Boeing 747s from Orient Thai Airlines are parked beside the apron. The airline stopped flying in October 2018, and the jumbos stayed where they were.
Both carriers on the route are based at Don Mueang. Thai AirAsia started flying in February 2004 and is a joint venture between Thailand's Asia Aviation, which holds about 55 percent, and Malaysia's AirAsia; its fleet is made up of Airbus A320 and A321neo aircraft. Thai Lion Air, an associate of Indonesia's Lion Air Group, began operations in December 2013 with a Bangkok to Chiang Mai flight and flies only Boeing 737s, the 737-800 and the longer 737-900ER. Whichever you book, expect a single-aisle jet.
Don Mueang itself is older than either airline by almost a century. It opened as an air force base in 1914, took its first commercial flight in 1924 and is now Thailand's main low-cost hub, with 31.65 million passengers in 2025, 19.4 million of them on domestic flights. Its two parallel runways are 3,700 m and 3,500 m long, and a third terminal is planned. Arrivals from Phitsanulok join that domestic flow in Terminal 2.
