Trat to Bangkok flight guide
Leaving Koh Chang or Koh Mak, the quickest way back to Bangkok is the Bangkok Airways flight from Trat (TDX) to Suvarnabhumi (BKK). It covers about 232 km in roughly 55 minutes on an ATR 72, and it is the only airline at Trat. Landing at Suvarnabhumi also means you are already at Bangkok's main international airport for a flight home.
Work backwards from your flight time. The car ferry from Ao Sapparot on Koh Chang to Ao Thammachat on the mainland runs from about 06:30 to 18:30, and the airport is about 17 km from the pier, roughly 20 minutes by road. The door-to-door minibus that meets flights also runs in the other direction and can pick you up from your hotel; book it the day before. From Trat town, the drive is about 32 km, or 30 to 45 minutes.
Bangkok Airways closes domestic check-in 40 minutes before departure, at counters 1 to 3 on the ground floor. The airport suggests arriving about an hour and a half ahead. The open-air pavilions have a café and restrooms, and the terminal closes in the evening, so it is no place to wait overnight. Details are in our Trat Airport guide.
Domestic arrivals use the main terminal, the same building as international departures. If you are connecting on one ticket, your bag can be checked through; on separate tickets, collect it and check in again upstairs. The Airport Rail Link from the basement reaches Phaya Thai in about 26 minutes, and the public taxi rank is on Level 1. Our Suvarnabhumi airport guide explains the layout, which is large: allow time for the walk to far gates.
Bangkok Airways' standard economy fare includes a checked bag, useful after a week on the islands. If your fare is a promotional one, check the allowance before you pack.
Flying out in the wet months from May to October? Rough seas sometimes slow the ferry crossing, so leave a buffer between the boat and your flight.
Trat Airport has belonged to Bangkok Airways since it opened on 31 March 2003; the first flight, an ATR 72-200, landed on 18 April that year. Its single runway is 1,800 m by 45 m, which is why the route is flown by turboprops.
