Beijing to Chiang Mai flight guide
Air China flies nonstop from Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) to Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) in northern Thailand. The 2,909 km flight takes about 4 hours 10 minutes and lands a short drive from Chiang Mai's old city, which suits travellers who want to start a Thailand trip in the mountains and temples of the north.
Air China is the only airline on the route. It is a full-service carrier, so economy fares normally include a checked bag and a meal; the allowance on your booking is the one that counts. Muslim and other special meals can be requested at least 24 hours ahead in manage-booking.
Make sure you head to Capital, in the north-east of the city, and not Daxing (PKX) in the far south. The two are well over an hour apart by road. The Capital Airport Express train from Dongzhimen is the quickest way out from the subway network, and taxis serve each terminal.
International passengers go through immigration in the international hall of Chiang Mai's single terminal building. Entry rules for Thailand vary by nationality, and every foreign visitor fills in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within 72 hours before landing. Check our Thailand visa page and the Thai immigration website for your passport. Since 15 September 2026, Thailand's old 60-day visa exemption has been replaced: passports from 60 countries and territories now get 30 days for tourism.
The airport sits just south-west of the old city, so the transfer is short whichever way you go. The airport authority, AOT, runs flat-fare shuttle vans from Gate 12 of the international terminal: 40 baht on route A1 to Nimmanhaemin, Huay Kaew and the moat, 40 baht on route A2 to Mahidol Road, the Night Bazaar and Chang Khlan Road, and 60 baht on route A3 to Ring Road 2. The yellow and red lines of the Chiang Mai City Bus run from 06:00 to 23:30, linking the airport with the old city, the Night Bazaar and Maya mall. A taxi or Grab reaches most old-city and Nimman hotels in 15 to 20 minutes. Car rental desks are on the first floor if you plan to drive to Doi Inthanon or Pai.
Chiang Mai is at its best from November to February, when days are warm and evenings can fall to about 10°C, a welcome change from a Beijing winter. Hot weather arrives from April, with highs around 40°C, and the rainy season runs roughly from June to October. Fares on Beijing departures climb around Chinese New Year, when demand for Thailand peaks.
Set your watch back one hour on landing (China is UTC+8, Thailand UTC+7); neither country changes its clocks. Chiang Mai has frequent domestic flights to Bangkok, where you can connect to the rest of Asia. Travellers heading on to South Asia often fly via Suvarnabhumi (see Bangkok to Dhaka flights), and Beijing has its own direct services too, listed on our Beijing Capital to Dhaka flights page.
Air China puts a lot of capacity into Thailand in the northern winter. For 2026/27 it has added a third daily Beijing to Phuket flight from 16 November 2026 to 20 February 2027. If you want both the north and the beaches, flying into Chiang Mai and home from Phuket on Air China is one way to avoid backtracking.

Chiang Mai International Airport sits just south-west of the old city, one of the shortest airport runs in Asia: a taxi or Grab reaches most old-city and Nimman hotels in 15 to 20 minutes.
Capital is north-east of the city and Daxing far to the south, so a transfer between them can take well over an hour. Avoid connections that switch airports.
