Flying from Chiang Mai to Beijing

In short

Air China flies nonstop from Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) in northern Thailand to Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), a 2,909 km trip of about 4 hours 10 minutes. It suits travellers finishing a holiday in the north who want to reach Beijing without changing planes in Bangkok, and business visitors heading home to northern China.

Air China is the only airline on the route. As a full-service carrier it normally includes a checked bag and a meal in economy; the exact allowance shows on your booking. Request a Muslim meal or another special meal through manage-booking at least 24 hours before departure.

Shuttle van routes A1 and A2 to Chiang Mai airport

Chiang Mai's airport sits just south-west of the old city, so the run to the terminal is short. The airport authority, AOT, lists several ways in. Airport shuttle vans charge a flat 40 baht on route A1 (Nimmanhaemin, Huay Kaew and the moat) and route A2 (Mahidol Road, the Night Bazaar and Chang Khlan Road hotels), and 60 baht on route A3 out to Ring Road 2; they pick up at Gate 12 of the international terminal. The yellow and red lines of the Chiang Mai City Bus run from 06:00 to 23:30 and link the airport with the old city, the Night Bazaar and Maya mall. Red songthaews and taxis or Grab cover everything else.

AOT asks passengers to arrive at least two hours before departure. For an international flight like this one, give yourself a little more: you need time for check-in, passport control and the security line on the international side of the building.

Beijing Capital, not Daxing, and the Airport Express

Flights land at Beijing Capital, north-east of the city. The Capital Airport Express train runs to Dongzhimen, where it connects with the subway, and taxis queue outside each terminal. Beijing also has a second airport, Daxing (PKX), far to the south. If you are booking a domestic onward flight, make sure it leaves from Capital, since a cross-city transfer between the two takes well over an hour.

China's entry rules depend on your passport. Some nationalities can visit without a visa or use visa-free transit, while others need a visa issued in advance. Check the Chinese embassy or consulate that covers your country before you buy a ticket.

Cool season flights from November to February

Chiang Mai's cool season, from November to February, brings warm days and evenings that can drop to about 10°C; it is the busiest period for flights out of the north. From April the heat builds to around 40°C, and the rains run roughly from June to October.

One hour ahead in Beijing, plus links via Bangkok

Clocks go forward one hour when you land in Beijing (Thailand is UTC+7, China UTC+8), and neither country uses daylight saving. Travellers starting further west in Asia often reach Chiang Mai through Bangkok (see our Dhaka to Bangkok flights page) and finish their trip with this flight north. Beijing Capital also has its own direct flights to South Asia, such as Dhaka to Beijing Capital flights, which matters if you are planning a round trip with an open jaw.

Air China's network from Beijing into Thailand is larger than this one route. For winter 2026/27 it has scheduled up to three daily Beijing to Phuket flights between 16 November 2026 and 20 February 2027, a sign of how much Chinese leisure traffic heads south in the cold months. Book Chiang Mai departures in December and January early.
