Dubai to Sylhet flight guide
Biman Bangladesh Airlines is the only airline flying nonstop from Dubai International Airport (DXB) to Osmani International Airport in Sylhet (ZYL). The 3,664 km flight takes about 5 hours, and it lets Sylhetis working in the Emirates fly home without a domestic connection through Dhaka.
Because the Biman service lands at Osmani, passport control, baggage and customs all happen there, and family can meet you at Sylhet. Routing through Dhaka means a domestic transfer and a second security check. When the Sylhet flight is full, the fallback is Dubai to Dhaka, then Air Astra, Novoair or US-Bangla on to Osmani, with enough time between flights to clear customs and walk to the domestic terminal.
Biman's allowance here is 30 kg checked and 7 kg in the cabin. Weigh the cases at home, since excess at check-in costs extra. Biman also links Sylhet with London Heathrow, Manchester, Doha, Jeddah, Medina and Sharjah, which helps families split between the Gulf and Britain.
The airport honours General M A G Osmani, commander-in-chief of the Bangladesh forces in 1971, and has a single 3,120 m runway. A new terminal by Beijing Urban Construction Group is due in December 2027, lifting capacity from 600,000 to 2 million passengers a year. Grand Sylhet Hotel stands next to the terminal at Khadimnagar, and the hotels around Dargah Gate, near the Shah Jalal shrine, are a short drive into the city.
Most of Sylhet's rain falls between May and September, and June is the wettest month. That is the season for a flooded Ratargul swamp forest, about 26 km from the city, and the wrong one for muddy trips into the hills. November to February brings the clearest days for tea-garden walks.
Bangladeshi citizens enter on their passport; foreign nationals should check Bangladesh's visa rules before flying. Sylhet is two hours ahead of Dubai.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines operates direct flights from Dubai (DXB) to Sylhet (ZYL). The flight takes about 5h 00m.

Visa & documents
Yes, all of it. Because the Biman service runs straight to Osmani, passport control, baggage collection and customs all happen there. That saves the domestic transfer and the second security check that people routing through Dhaka have to go through, and family can meet you at Osmani itself.
The forest floods from about May to early October. It lies on the Gowain River in Gowainghat, roughly 26 km from the city. You need permission from the forest office, and from Gowainghat you hire a local engine boat, then a smaller boat to move between the trees. A watchtower inside gives a view over the whole swamp.
Getting there
Book Dubai to Dhaka and add a short domestic hop. Air Astra, Novoair and US-Bangla all fly between Dhaka and Osmani. Leave enough time between the two legs to collect your bags, clear customs and walk to the single-storey domestic terminal beside the international buildings at Hazrat Shahjalal.
Yes. Beijing Urban Construction Group is building one, together with a new control tower, cargo building and apron, due for completion in December 2027. It will raise capacity from 600,000 to 2 million passengers a year, with six boarding bridges and 36 check-in counters, which should ease the crowds at peak homecoming times.
It honours General M A G Osmani, commander-in-chief of the Bangladesh forces in the 1971 independence war. The airfield was called Sylhet Civil Airport until it took his name that year. Its single runway measures 3,120 m.
General
Two hours. Dubai keeps UTC+4 year round and Bangladesh UTC+6. Expect to touch down about seven hours later on the local clock than the time you took off.
Yes. Besides Dubai, Biman flies from Sylhet to London Heathrow and Manchester, as well as Doha, Jeddah, Medina and Sharjah. That suits Sylheti families split between the Gulf and Britain who want to land at the same airport for a wedding or a family gathering.
Timing & weather
June is the wettest month on the city's climate record. The dry spell from November to February brings the clearest days for a family visit. April and October sit on the edges of the rainy season and can go either way, so pack an umbrella then.
Around Dargah Gate. Two of the hotels under Where to stay are there, one at the gate itself and one on the east side, a short walk from the tomb. The shrine draws thousands of pilgrims a year, so book rooms in that quarter early if your visit falls on a religious holiday.
Families & accessibility
Two of the hotels under Where to stay have pools: one in Shahjalal Upashahar with a spa, and one on Mirza Jangal Road with an indoor pool, useful in the rainy months. The resort at Khadimnagar is another option, though it is further from the city's markets and the shrine.
