Flying from Luang Prabang to Bangkok

In short

Bangkok Airways and Thai AirAsia fly nonstop from Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ) in northern Laos to Bangkok, landing at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) respectively. The 706 km flight takes about 1 hour 25 minutes. It is the usual way out of northern Laos for travellers heading home, to the Thai islands or to long-haul connections.

A 10-minute ride from town to the single-runway airport

The airport is only about 4 km from the town centre, so a tuk-tuk or hotel van gets you there in 10 to 15 minutes. It has a single 2,500 m runway and is the hub of Lao Airlines, which flies to Vientiane, Hanoi and Chiang Mai and resumes its Bangkok service on 25 October 2026. The terminal is small, but leave enough time for immigration on busy mornings.

Bangkok Airways to Suvarnabhumi or Thai AirAsia to Don Mueang

Bangkok Airways includes a checked bag and lands at Suvarnabhumi, which suits same-day connections. Thai AirAsia is the low-cost option and lands at Don Mueang; add a checked bag when you book if you need one.

Suvarnabhumi into the city by rail, taxi or Grab

Suvarnabhumi is about 25 km east of central Bangkok and handled almost 63 million passengers in 2025. The Airport Rail Link runs to Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes and meets the BTS Skytrain there; Makkasan connects to the MRT Blue Line. Metered taxis and Grab wait outside arrivals.

Don Mueang, north of the city, opened in 1914 and is now the base of Thai AirAsia, Thai AirAsia X, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air. International flights use Terminal 1. The SRT Dark Red Line stops there, and bus A4 runs to Khaosan Road for 50 baht, which suits backpackers arriving from Laos.

Thai entry rules depend on nationality; see our Thailand visa page. Every foreign visitor completes the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before landing.

Dhaka flights and no time change from Laos

The Dhaka flights on Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways leave from Suvarnabhumi (see Bangkok to Dhaka flights). If you land at Don Mueang, allow time to cross the city and check in again.

There is no time difference: Laos and Thailand both keep UTC+7.
