Flying from Muscat to Sylhet

In short

SalamAir, Oman's low-cost airline, is the only carrier flying nonstop from Muscat International Airport (MCT) to Osmani International Airport in Sylhet (ZYL). Its Airbus A321neo covers 3,399 km in about 4 hours 50 minutes, so workers from greater Sylhet going home on leave no longer change planes in Dhaka.

SalamAir's history and OV421

SalamAir started flying in January 2017, with Salalah as its first route from Muscat. In March 2026 the Government of Oman took a 90% stake in the airline together with Oman Air, having previously held it through a development company. OV421 runs about three times a week.

The A321neo is the backbone of the fleet, alongside six of the slightly shorter A320neo, and low-cost airlines move aircraft between routes as needed. The type on your booking is the best guide, though it can change close to departure.

What a standard SalamAir fare includes

The bag allowance depends on the fare. A standard ticket on this route includes 20 kg checked and 7 kg in the cabin; lighter fares can strip out the hold bag. Check what your fare includes before you pack for the family.

Night buses A1 and route 8 to Seeb

Mwasalat route 8 links Al Khuwair and Al Mouj with the airport, and the A1 does the same from Ruwi and Mabela; both run through the night. With 20 kg plus a cabin bag, the bus is manageable if you avoid changes.

June in Muscat averages a high of 39.4 °C and a low of 30.4 °C, so even a pre-dawn airport run is hot. Keep a water bottle, empty for security and refilled airside.

Resident card, passport and two lost hours

Carry your passport with your Omani resident card, and make sure the card will still be valid on the day you fly back. Bangladeshi citizens need nothing more to enter at Sylhet.

You lose two hours on the way out. Muscat keeps UTC+4 and Sylhet UTC+6, and neither side has summer time.

Osmani hotels and the 2027 terminal

Osmani sits on the northern edge of the city among the tea gardens. Hotels near the Shah Jalal shrine at Dargah Gate are a short ride in, and one stands on Airport Road by the terminal. A new terminal due in December 2027 should lift capacity from 600,000 to 2 million passengers a year and add six boarding bridges, so walking across the apron will become rarer.

For family near Dhaka, Air Astra, Novoair and Biman link Osmani with the capital. Book that leg separately with time to clear immigration and collect your SalamAir bags.

Tanguar Haor and Lawachara from Sylhet

From Sunamganj, Tanguar Haor, spread across Dharmapasha and Tahirpur upazilas, is a Ramsar wetland that draws around 200 kinds of migratory birds in winter, and its protected area takes in around 46 villages. Lawachara forest near Sreemangal, about 60 km from Sylhet and some 8 km outside the town, is one of the few places where western hoolock gibbons still live in the wild; an early start gives the best chance of hearing them. Jaflong and Ratargul make easy day trips once you have rested.

January is Sylhet's coolest month at around 18.4 °C, with nights near 9.8 °C, cold enough after a winter in Oman to need a warm layer indoors.
