Flying from Muscat to Chattogram

In short

A number of airlines fly nonstop from Muscat International Airport (MCT) to Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram (CGP): SalamAir, US-Bangla Airlines and Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The 3,429 km flight takes about 4 hours 45 minutes, the shorter direction on this route, and it mostly carries Bangladeshi workers from Chattogram Division going home from Oman.

SalamAir, US-Bangla or Biman?

SalamAir, Oman's budget airline, has the most flights, about 13 a week on OV401 and OV403, using an Airbus A321neo with 20 kg of checked baggage. US-Bangla flies about three times a week and Biman twice, on a Boeing 777-300ER; both include 30 kg. Everyone gets 7 kg in the cabin. Families carrying a load of gifts usually lean towards the Bangladeshi airlines.

Mwasalat buses or a taxi to Seeb

The airport is at Seeb, about 32 km from old Muscat and Muttrah, so budget for traffic as well as check-in. Mwasalat's A1 bus runs from Ruwi at any hour, and route 8, between Al Mouj and Al Khuwair, also stops at the airport around the clock. Taxis cost more but save the walk with heavy cases.

The current terminal opened in March 2018, with a first phase built for 20 million passengers a year, so check-in halls rarely feel cramped. It is home base for SalamAir and for the flag carrier Oman Air.

Muscat's summer heat and Arabian Sea cyclones

Afternoon highs in Muscat average 39.5 °C in May, and the city's record of 49.2 °C was set in August. Carry water and avoid standing at a roadside stop at midday. Cyclones in the Arabian Sea occasionally disrupt flights, mostly around June; Gonu struck in June 2007 and Phet in June 2010. If a storm is forecast, check your airline's notices before leaving.

Chattogram is two hours ahead of Oman

Oman keeps UTC+4 and Bangladesh UTC+6, so set your watch two hours forward in Chattogram. The gap is the same in every season.

Shah Amanat's 2,940 m runway

Shah Amanat's single runway runs 2,940 m and can take aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 747-400, so Biman's 777-300ER fits comfortably, though the terminal is far smaller than the one at Seeb. The airport was called MA Hannan until April 2005, when it was renamed after Shah Amanat, an 18th-century saint of the city; the code CGP stayed the same.

The airport sits at the river mouth, about 20 km from GEC Circle and 18.5 km from the city railway station. Expect slow traffic past the port on the way in.

Arriving in Patenga puts you on the right side of the city for the south. The road tunnel under the Karnaphuli, opened in 2023 and renamed the Karnaphuli Tunnel in February 2025, links Patenga with Anwara. The tube is 3.32 km, part of a 9.39 km route, with tolls from 200 to 1,000 taka by vehicle, and it shortens the drive towards Cox's Bazar.

Chattogram's wet July and cooler winter months

June to September brings most of Chattogram's 2,964 mm of rain a year, with July alone averaging 718 mm, and low roads can flood. January, with a mean of about 19.8 °C, and December are the coolest and driest months.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Getting there

Yes. Mwasalat route 8, which runs between Al Mouj and Al Khuwair, also stops at the airport, and like the A1 it operates around the clock. That saves a trip into Ruwi first if you are staying on the Al Khuwair side.
