George Town to Bangkok flight guide
Several airlines fly nonstop from Penang International Airport (PEN) in Malaysia to Bangkok: Thai Airways International into Suvarnabhumi (BKK), and Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air into Don Mueang (DMK). The 935 km flight takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. It suits food-trip weekends, medical visits between the two cities and travellers adding Thailand to a Malaysian holiday.
Your airline decides which side of Bangkok you land on. Thai Airways uses Suvarnabhumi, east of the city, while the low-cost carriers use Don Mueang in the north. Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air price the seat alone, so a checked bag, a meal and seat choice cost extra; the Thai Airways fare already includes them. Add the extras before comparing totals.
For most people on a short break, the deciding factor is where they are staying. Don Mueang is closer to Chatuchak and the northern districts, Suvarnabhumi to Sukhumvit and the road east to Pattaya. A weekend bag that fits the low-cost cabin allowance usually makes Don Mueang the cheaper choice.
Penang International Airport sits at Bayan Lepas in the south-east of the island, about 16 km from George Town. Grab cars take 30 to 40 minutes to the heritage centre, and Rapid Penang buses cover the same road for less. Leave extra time in the evening rush on the coastal expressway.
If you are returning to Malaysia on this route later, note that every foreign traveller entering Malaysia files a Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) no later than three days before arrival. Each traveller needs an individual card, children included, and the official service is free.
Every non-Thai passenger must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before landing. It has applied since 1 May 2025 to arrivals by air, land and sea, opens three days before your travel date, costs nothing on the official site at tdac.immigration.go.th, and is not a visa.
Thailand replaced its 60-day visa exemption on 15 September 2026. Malaysian and Singaporean passport holders are on the new 30-day exemption list, and Malaysians are also exempt from the cap of two land-border entries a year. Other nationalities should check their category on the Thai e-Visa portal; our Thailand visa page explains the main routes.
Suvarnabhumi lies about 25 km east of central Bangkok. The Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes, with a BTS Skytrain interchange there and an MRT Blue Line link at Makkasan. Metered taxis and Grab wait at arrivals.
The airport's public transport centre also runs city buses. The S1 goes to Sanam Luang near the Grand Palace between 06:00 and 17:00 for a flat 60 baht, and minibus 555 crosses to Don Mueang for up to 60 baht, handy if a later flight leaves from the other airport.
Don Mueang has the cheapest airport buses in the city. The A1 runs via BTS Chatuchak to Mo Chit 2 bus terminal from 06:50 to 23:59, and the A2 runs via Chatuchak to Victory Monument from 05:00 to 22:00. Both cost 30 baht, and the stop is at Gate 6 on the first floor of the international terminal.
The SRT Red Line stops at Don Mueang and runs south to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal at Bang Sue, where you change to the MRT Blue Line. Scheduled trains run from about 05:00 to 23:45.
The clock goes back one hour when you land: Malaysia keeps UTC+8 and Thailand UTC+7, and neither uses daylight saving. Travellers connecting to South Asia should note that the Dhaka flights on Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways leave from Suvarnabhumi (see Bangkok to Dhaka flights). From Don Mueang, budget at least four hours for the road transfer and a fresh check-in.

Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) are far apart. Low-cost flights on this route use Don Mueang, so match the airport to your hotel or connecting flight before you pay.
Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air charge for checked baggage. It is cheaper added online at booking than at the airport.

Apply for the Thai e-Visa online well before you fly and fill in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card in the 72 hours before landing; airlines check both at check-in.

Getting there
Flights land at both Bangkok airports: one airline at Suvarnabhumi, and Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air at Don Mueang. Schedules change by season, so check the flights for your dates in the search above.
About 1 hour 40 minutes in the air. The two airports are 935 km apart in a straight line; actual times vary a little by airline, aircraft and wind.
Both. Thai Airways International uses Suvarnabhumi (BKK); a few airlines use Don Mueang (DMK). The airports are on opposite sides of the city, so check the code on your ticket.
Suvarnabhumi lies about 25 km east of central Bangkok. The Airport Rail Link runs to Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes and meets the BTS Skytrain there; Makkasan station connects to the MRT Blue Line. Metered taxis and Grab wait outside arrivals. Don Mueang is north of the city. The SRT Dark Red Line stops at the airport and runs to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bang Sue), where it meets the MRT Blue Line; airport buses and metered taxis cover the rest of the city.
Yes. Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways fly Bangkok to Dhaka from Suvarnabhumi. If you land at Don Mueang, allow at least four hours to transfer by road and check in again. On separate tickets you clear Thai immigration and collect your bag, so you need a Thai visa. See Bangkok to Dhaka flights.
About 16 km. Grab cars take 30 to 40 minutes to the heritage centre, and Rapid Penang buses cover the same route more cheaply.
General
The clock moves one hour back on landing in Thailand (Thailand is UTC+7). Neither side uses daylight saving, so the gap stays the same all year.
What's included
It depends on the airline. Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air are low-cost carriers whose basic fares include only a cabin bag, so add checked baggage when you book. The full-service airlines normally include a checked bag; the allowance is shown on your booking.
Visa & documents
It depends on your passport. Malaysian and Singaporean citizens are on Thailand's 30-day visa-exemption list, which replaced the 60-day scheme on 15 September 2026; others should check the Thai e-Visa portal. Every foreign arrival also completes the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card, which opens three days before travel.
Stay & facilities
On the full-service airlines, request a Muslim (halal) meal when you book or at least 24 hours before departure through the airline's manage-booking page. On Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air, meals are bought online or on board; check the menu for halal options.
Prices & payment
Take the A1 or A2 airport bus for 30 baht. The A1 goes via BTS Chatuchak to Mo Chit 2, and the A2 via Chatuchak to Victory Monument; both leave from Gate 6 on the first floor of the international terminal.
