Sakon Nakhon to Bangkok flight guide

Flying from Sakon Nakhon to Bangkok

In short

From Sakon Nakhon (SNO) the only place to fly is Bangkok, and both airlines on the route land at Don Mueang (DMK). The nonstop flight covers 524 km in a little over an hour. Sakon Nakhon has no other scheduled routes, so trips to Chiang Mai, Phuket or abroad all connect in Bangkok.

Getting to the airport takes 15 to 20 minutes from the centre; it lies in That Na Weng, off the road to Nakhon Phanom. There is no airport bus, and taxis do not always wait at hotels, so ask reception to book one. An hour before departure is usually enough at this small terminal, but give yourself 90 minutes around Songkran and New Year. The building has no restaurant, so eat in town. Our Sakon Nakhon Airport guide covers the details.

Dark Red Line or buses A1 to A4 from Terminal 2

You land at Terminal 2, the domestic side of Don Mueang. For central Bangkok, the SRT Dark Red Line runs from the station across the footbridge to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in about 20 minutes, with the MRT Blue Line onward from there. The A1 to A4 airport buses from Terminal 1, Level 1, Gate 6 are the cheapest direct rides, and Grab works from signed pickup points.

Four hours to connect at Suvarnabhumi

Many travellers from Sakon Nakhon continue on international flights from Suvarnabhumi. Don Mueang runs a free shuttle there for passengers with an onward ticket, but the drive across Bangkok can be slow, and our airport guide suggests allowing at least four hours between landing at Don Mueang and checking in at Suvarnabhumi. Because Sakon Nakhon's flights all leave in daylight, an evening long-haul departure is the comfortable pairing.

Indigo cloth, produce and the cost of a bag

Both airlines sell their lowest fares without checked baggage. Indigo cloth and local produce add weight quickly, so add a bag when booking rather than at the counter. Compare the airlines with the bag included; that is usually where the difference shows.

Civil flights since 1972 on a military runway

The terminal you check in at belongs to a working military airfield. Sakon Nakhon Airport opened to civil traffic in 1972 on Royal Thai Army land, and the air force still uses its 2,600 m runway. The Department of Airports manages passenger services. Traffic in 2025 reached 348,600 passengers across 2,402 aircraft movements.

A 2018 budget report named the airport for expansion and for handover to Airports of Thailand, though the sources we checked give no handover date.

Nok Air 737-800s or Thai AirAsia A320s

Nok Air flies Boeing 737-800s with 189 seats, recognisable by the bird's beak painted on the nose. The airline began flying on 23 July 2004 and is based at Don Mueang. Thai AirAsia uses Airbus A320-family jets, from 180-seat A320s to 236-seat A321neos, and has its head office at Don Mueang as well.

Don Mueang's runways and 2025 traffic

Don Mueang opened as an air force base in 1914 and welcomed its first commercial flight in 1924. Today it is Thailand's main low-cost hub, with 31.65 million passengers in 2025. Airports of Thailand operates it, and its two parallel runways measure 3,700 m and 3,500 m. Thai Lion Air is based there too, so all of the Don Mueang low-cost airlines can carry you onward around Thailand. Thai Lion Air flies 28 Boeing 737s, a mix of 737-800s and 737-900ERs. For Suvarnabhumi, reckon on an hour to an hour and a half between the airports by rail or bus.

How to book Sakon Nakhon to Bangkok for less

How to keep the trip to Bangkok simple.

4 hrssuggested buffer to Suvarnabhumi

Allow four hours for Suvarnabhumi

International flights mostly leave from Suvarnabhumi on the far side of Bangkok. Use the free shuttle with an onward ticket and do not cut the connection fine.

15–20 mintown to airport

Ask the hotel to book your taxi

There is no airport bus, and taxis are not always waiting outside hotels. A booking the evening before saves a scramble.

20 minDon Mueang to Krung Thep Aphiwat

Use the Red Line in rush hour

The train beats the expressway at peak times. Change to the MRT Blue Line at Krung Thep Aphiwat for most of central Bangkok.
