Chiang Rai to Bangkok flight guide
Leaving Chiang Rai for Bangkok takes about 1 hour 20 minutes in the air, over about 676 km. Your choice of airline decides where you land: several airlines go to Don Mueang (DMK), while two go to Suvarnabhumi (BKK).
Mae Fah Luang – Chiang Rai International Airport is about 8 km north of town, 15 to 25 minutes by car. There is no airport bus any more, so book a taxi or use an app; fewer cars cruise this part of town, so order early. If you are coming from Mae Sai or the Golden Triangle, the airport is on your way south, about an hour's drive. The single terminal is small and easy, but Airports of Thailand still asks for two hours before departure, and the Bangkok flights around holidays fill the check-in hall. Low-cost airlines check cabin bag weight here.
If you have time to fill, the Coral Executive Lounge near gates 1 and 2 sells walk-in entry, open roughly from 08:00 to 21:00. Most cafés and shops are landside, so eat before security.
Land at Suvarnabhumi if you are flying abroad next. Thai Airways, with 21 Chiang Rai flights a week this winter, connects to its international network there, and the Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in about 26 minutes for anyone heading into town.
Don Mueang is where most Chiang Rai flights arrive. Domestic passengers come out in Terminal 2. The SRT Red Line, across a footbridge, gets to Krung Thep Aphiwat in about 20 minutes, and buses A1 to A4 run to Mo Chit, Victory Monument, Lumphini and Khao San Road. A free shuttle between the two airports serves passengers with an onward ticket, but allow up to two hours.
Plan baggage before you pack. Thai Airways includes a checked bag in standard economy; the other airlines sell basic fares with cabin baggage only, so add a bag online if you are carrying tea, coffee or textiles from the north.
Taxis at Mae Fah Luang are called from service points in the arrival hall, and Airports of Thailand notes that these cost a little more than cars booked outside. Drivers heading for the airport follow Phaholyothin Road, the Chiang Rai to Mae Chan highway, and turn onto Road 5023 for the last stretch. If you have been touring the province by car, the rental companies sit on the first floor and take cars back at the counter at the front of the terminal; AOT's Sawasdee app carries advance-booking discounts for them. For a dawn departure, AOT itself suggests a night in one of the hotels near the airport.
The four airport buses leave from the first floor of the domestic terminal at Gate 12. A1 to Mo Chit 2 bus terminal and A2 to Victory Monument cost 30 baht; A3 to Pratunam and Lumphini and A4 to Khao San Road cost 50 baht. A2 starts earliest, at 05:00, and A1 runs latest, until 23:59, which covers most evening arrivals from Chiang Rai.
