Flying from Chiang Mai to Hong Kong

In short

HK Express flies nonstop from Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) in northern Thailand to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). The 1,605 km flight takes about 2 hours 30 minutes in the air; HK Express quotes about 3 hours 5 minutes gate to gate. It suits budget travellers ending a Thai trip in the north and Hong Kong residents heading home.

HK Express is the only airline on the route. It is a low-cost airline, so the basic fare covers a cabin bag only; add checked baggage when you book, which is cheaper than paying at the airport. Food and drinks are sold on board or can be pre-ordered online.

40 baht shuttle vans from Nimman and the Night Bazaar

The airport is close to the city centre, and the official options are cheap. AOT, which runs the airport, lists flat-fare shuttle vans: 40 baht on route A1 from Nimmanhaemin, Huay Kaew and the moat, 40 baht on route A2 from Mahidol Road, the Night Bazaar and Chang Khlan Road, and 60 baht on route A3 from Ring Road 2. The Chiang Mai City Bus yellow and red lines run from 06:00 to 23:30 through the old city and the Night Bazaar to the airport. HK Express also points out that many hotels offer free airport transfers, so ask yours. Songthaews, tuk-tuks and taxis are easy to find; agree the fare first.

AOT recommends arriving at least two hours before departure. As this is an international flight, check-in counters close well before take-off and passport control can be busy in the evening peak, so do not cut it fine.

Airport Express via Tsing Yi and Kowloon, with hotel shuttles

Hong Kong International Airport is on Chek Lap Kok island. The Airport Express reaches Hong Kong station in Central in about 24 minutes, calling at Tsing Yi and Kowloon, with free shuttle buses to many hotels from Kowloon and Hong Kong stations. Buses and taxis are cheaper or more direct for some districts. Hong Kong sets its own entry rules, separate from mainland China, and many nationalities can visit without a visa; check the Hong Kong Immigration Department for your passport before you fly.

Fares peak at New Year and Chinese New Year

Chiang Mai's cool season, November to February, is the most popular time to visit, with warm days and evenings as low as about 10°C. Fares out of Chiang Mai rise around New Year and Chinese New Year. From April the north becomes hot, up to about 40°C, and from roughly June to October expect frequent storms. HK Express has advertised one-way fares from HKD 390 for November and December 2026 dates, excluding taxes and surcharges, so it pays to watch for sales.

Hong Kong's one-hour lead and Bangkok connections

Hong Kong is one hour ahead of Thailand all year (UTC+8 against UTC+7). Many travellers from further west reach Chiang Mai via Bangkok (see our Dhaka to Bangkok flights page) and then fly out from the north, saving a trip back to the capital. Hong Kong also has direct links of its own across Asia, including Dhaka to Hong Kong flights, which helps if you are booking an open-jaw trip.
