Flying from Khon Kaen to Chiang Mai

In short

Thai AirAsia runs the only nonstop between Khon Kaen (KKC) and Chiang Mai (CNX), a hop of about 479 km that takes around 1 hour 5 minutes. For anyone living in or visiting Isan, it turns a day of driving into a morning's travel.

Khon Kaen's rebuilt terminal and its 06:00 opening

Khon Kaen Airport is about 8 km north-west of the centre, 15 to 20 minutes by taxi along Highway 12. The rebuilt four-storey terminal has 24 check-in counters on the second floor, a food centre and a restaurant on the top floor. It opens at about 06:00, so an early flight means an early taxi rather than a night at the airport. Taxis in Khon Kaen usually work on a flat fare, so settle the price before you leave your hotel. The city bus runs to the airport too, from about 07:30.

Thai AirAsia, which uses Khon Kaen as its north-eastern base, flies this route on fewer days than its Bangkok services, and the schedule was cut back during the quieter months of 2026, so check that your date is operating.

Four ways from Chiang Mai arrivals into town

Chiang Mai International Airport is open 24 hours and sits about 4 km south-west of the centre. Arrivals come out on the ground floor, where you will find:

  • the airport taxi counter, selling flat-fare rides to most city addresses, plus metered taxis with an airport surcharge;
  • Grab and Bolt, picking up from a marked area outside Exit 2, with Bolt also offering motorbike rides for solo travellers;
  • the air-conditioned RTC bus route 24 in daytime, with loops to Tha Phae Gate and to Nimman;
  • left luggage at the AIRPORTELs counter near Gate 7, open 06:00 to midnight.

The Chiang Mai airport guide covers lounges, food and overnight waits in more detail.

Room for gifts and Isan silk on the way back

The basic Thai AirAsia fare includes cabin baggage only. Add a checked bag when you book, especially if you are flying back with gifts or Isan silk.

Yi Peng, smoky months and the rains in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is at its best from November to February: cool mornings, clear skies and the lantern festival of Yi Peng around the November full moon. From February to April, smoke from crop and forest fires often brings poor air quality. June to October is the rainy season, wetter but greener and quieter.

Khon Kaen Airport in figures

Khon Kaen International Airport sits about 2 km off Highway 12 and is run by the Department of Airports. Thai Airways opened it on 6 February 1963 with a 28-passenger DC-3, and customs status followed on 1 September 1991. The present terminal is the product of a two billion baht upgrade that took usable space from 16,500 to about 44,500 square metres, with room for around five million passengers a year.

Actual traffic in 2025 was 1,705,474 passengers on 11,444 aircraft movements.

Chiang Mai and Thai AirAsia

Chiang Mai International Airport is owned by the Royal Thai Air Force and operated by Airports of Thailand. It handled 9,517,206 passengers in 2025, and its domestic network is broad: Thai AirAsia alone flies from there to nine Thai airports, and Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, Thai VietJet, Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways all serve it too. From Chiang Mai you can continue nonstop to Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui or Hat Yai without touching Bangkok.

Thai AirAsia flew its first service in February 2004 and in August 2025 had 62 Airbus A320-family aircraft. Asia Aviation of Thailand owns about 55 percent and Malaysia's AirAsia about 45 percent.
