Khon Kaen to Phuket flight guide
The quickest way from Khon Kaen (KKC) to the Andaman Sea is Thai AirAsia's nonstop to Phuket (HKT), the only direct flight on the pair. It covers about 1,048 km and takes roughly 1 hour 50 minutes, so you can leave Khon Kaen after lunch and be on a Phuket beach by evening.
Thai AirAsia, which treats Khon Kaen as its base in the North-East, restarts the route on 25 October 2026 with up to three flights a week. That is a thin schedule, so know the fallback: Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air fly from Khon Kaen to Don Mueang, Thai Airways and Thai VietJet to Suvarnabhumi, and both Bangkok airports have plenty of onward flights to Phuket. A connection adds several hours and, on separate tickets, the risk of missing the second flight.
Khon Kaen has one four-storey terminal about 8 km north-west of the centre. Check-in is on the second floor, above arrivals, with 24 counters. Ninety minutes before departure is usually enough; allow two hours around Songkran, New Year and long weekends. The city bus reaches the airport for a small flat fare, and a taxi from the centre takes 15 to 20 minutes.
A basic Thai AirAsia ticket includes a 7 kg cabin bag and nothing in the hold. Beach trips tend to mean more luggage on the way home than on the way out, so consider adding a checked bag for both directions when you book rather than paying airport rates in Phuket.
You arrive at the Domestic Terminal of Phuket International Airport, at Mai Khao on the island's north-west tip. Everything is a drive: Phuket Town is about 32 km away and Patong roughly 38 km by road. Meter taxis wait at a stand outside the terminal (turn right and ignore offers inside the building), licensed limousine counters sell fixed-price cars, and the flat-fare Smart Bus runs down the west coast via Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata to Rawai. For a night near the airport, Nai Yang and Mai Khao beaches are a few minutes away.
Phuket's dry season runs from November to April, the best time for calm seas and boat trips. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings rain and rougher water on the west-coast beaches, but also quieter hotels.
Air service to Khon Kaen began on 6 February 1963, when a Thai Airways DC-3 brought 28 passengers on the first flight. The airport became a customs airport on 1 September 1991 and is run by the Department of Airports. Its terminal, rebuilt in a two billion baht project, grew from 16,500 to about 44,500 square metres and can take about five million passengers a year; 1,705,474 used it in 2025. The runway is 3,050 m long.
Phuket is run by Airports of Thailand and handled 17,474,051 passengers in 2025, more than 10.8 million of them on international flights. Domestic arrivals use Terminal 3. The airport also has Terminal 2 for international flights and Terminal X for charters, opened in February 2014.
Thai AirAsia flew its first service in February 2004 and keeps its head office at Don Mueang. In August 2025 it operated 62 Airbus aircraft with seven more on order, and Phuket is one of its seven operating bases. Seat counts run from 180 on the A320-200 to 236 on the A321neo. Asia Aviation of Thailand owns about 55 percent of the airline.

Thai AirAsia is the only airline flying Khon Kaen to Phuket nonstop. Other airlines connect through Bangkok.
The basic fare covers a 7 kg cabin bag. Add a checked bag when you book; it costs more at the airport.
A few things that make this trip easier.
There are only a few departures in each direction. Booking both legs together means you are not left choosing between a long stay and a Bangkok connection on the way home.
The air-conditioned Smart Bus runs roughly hourly from the airport down the west coast, stopping at the main beaches. It takes about 90 minutes to Patong, longer than a taxi but far cheaper.
In the rainy season the west-coast beaches often fly red flags for strong currents. Check with lifeguards before swimming, even on a sunny day.
Most visitors stay on the west coast at Patong, Karon or Kata, or in Phuket Town, all a drive of 40 minutes or more from the airport.
