Chiang Mai to Khon Kaen flight guide
Khon Kaen is about 479 km east of Chiang Mai as the crow flies, and Thai AirAsia covers it nonstop in roughly 1 hour 5 minutes. It is the only airline on the route, which links the north's biggest city with the commercial centre of Isan, the north-east.
Thai AirAsia treats Khon Kaen as its north-eastern base, flying from there to both Bangkok airports, Chiang Mai and Phuket. The Chiang Mai flights were reduced during the quiet months of 2026, so check the days available for your dates. By road the trip is a long cross-country drive of most of a day, so the flight saves a lot of time.
Domestic check-in is at the northern end of the terminal hall. Allow at least two hours before departure at busy times, and get any cash you need on the ground floor, because there are no ATMs upstairs after security. Cabin bags are weighed at check-in.
Khon Kaen Airport sits in Ban Pet, about 8 km north-west of the city centre and just off Highway 12 towards Loei. Everything is in one four-storey terminal: arrivals and the transport counters on the lower floors, check-in on the second. Khon Kaen is one of the few Isan airports with a scheduled city bus, which runs to the centre and the main bus terminal from about 07:30 to 22:30. The airport limousine is a shared ride to city hotels; buy the ticket at the counter before baggage claim, because the first cars fill quickly. Taxis wait outside arrivals and usually quote a flat price to the centre, so agree it before you set off. The trip takes 15 to 20 minutes.
The airport also serves Maha Sarakham and Kalasin, and a Tourist Police service centre on the first floor can help in English. The terminal closes overnight, roughly 22:00 to 06:00. Our Khon Kaen Airport guide has more on the facilities and car hire desks.
Thai AirAsia's basic fare includes cabin baggage only. Add a checked bag online when you book.
Isan is most pleasant from November to February, when it is dry and the evenings are cooler. March to May is hot, and the rainy season runs from about May to October. Day trips from Khon Kaen to the dinosaur sites at Phu Wiang or to Ubolratana Dam are easiest in the dry months.
Khon Kaen's airport dates from 6 February 1963, when Thai Airways landed a DC-3 with 28 passengers on its first service to the province. It became a customs airport on 1 September 1991. The Department of Airports runs it under the Ministry of Transport.
The four-storey terminal now offers about 44,500 square metres, expanded from 16,500 under a two billion baht upgrade, and is designed for about five million passengers a year. In 2025 it handled 1,705,474, up 2.25 percent. The runway is 3,050 m long and 45 m wide. The airport recorded 11,444 aircraft movements and about 369 tonnes of freight in 2025.
From Khon Kaen, Thai AirAsia flies to both Bangkok airports, Chiang Mai and Phuket; Thai Airways and Thai VietJet serve Suvarnabhumi and Thai Lion Air serves Don Mueang. Chiang Mai, where you start, handled 9.52 million passengers in 2025 and has been open 24 hours since April 2014.
