Khon Kaen to Bangkok flight guide
Multiple airlines fly from Khon Kaen to Bangkok, split between the capital's two airports. A few airlines land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK); two land at Don Mueang (DMK). The flight covers about 378 km in roughly 55 minutes, less time than it takes to cross Bangkok in rush hour.
Before you book, decide where you need to be when you land. Suvarnabhumi is the international hub, so it is the right choice if Bangkok is a connection: Thai Airways International can carry you and your bag from Khon Kaen to most of Asia and Europe on one ticket. Thai Airways' winter 2026/27 schedule has 28 Khon Kaen flights a week, which makes it easy to fit a connection. Don Mueang is better for stays in the north of Bangkok, around Chatuchak or along the Red Line.
Khon Kaen Airport is about 8 km north-west of the city, off Highway 12, and a taxi takes 15 to 20 minutes. The city bus also serves the airport. Check-in is on the second floor of the four-storey terminal, which has 24 counters and is rarely crowded, though Monday mornings and Sunday evenings are busier with business travellers and students. There is a food centre on the ground floor and a restaurant at the top; the airside choice is thin, so eat before security. The airport works roughly 06:00 to 22:00. The Khon Kaen airport guide has the floor plan.
At Suvarnabhumi, domestic arrivals reach the same baggage hall area as other flights on Level 2. The Airport Rail Link runs to Phaya Thai in about 26 minutes, and the public taxi rank is on Level 1. Read the Suvarnabhumi airport guide for the layout. At Don Mueang, flights use Terminal 2, and the Red Line station opposite takes you to Krung Thep Aphiwat in about 20 minutes; see the Don Mueang airport guide. If you land at Don Mueang but fly on from Suvarnabhumi, the free shuttle from Terminal 1 needs a same-day onward ticket.
Low-cost fares on Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Thai VietJet Air generally include a cabin bag only, with checked baggage bought separately. Thai Airways includes a checked bag in economy, worth remembering if you are carrying Khon Kaen silk or gifts home.
Khon Kaen has had an air link with the capital since 6 February 1963, when Thai Airways opened the route with a 28-passenger Douglas DC-3. The airport became a customs airport on 1 September 1991, and today's jets need about an hour for a trip that took far longer then.
