Phuket to Khon Kaen flight guide
One airline links Phuket (HKT) with Khon Kaen (KKC) nonstop: Thai AirAsia. The two airports are about 1,048 km apart in a straight line, and the flight takes roughly 1 hour 50 minutes, against most of a day if you connect through Bangkok.
The schedule is thin. Thai AirAsia put the route back on sale for the winter timetable, with up to three flights a week from 25 October 2026, after running a similar pattern earlier in the year. With so few departures, the airline decides which days you can fly, so check the calendar in the search before you fix hotel nights at either end.
Domestic flights use Phuket's Domestic Terminal, next to the International Terminal and linked to it by a covered walkway of about five minutes. The airport sits at Mai Khao on the island's north-west coast, about 32 km from Phuket Town and roughly 38 km by road from Patong, so allow close to an hour from the west-coast beaches. From November to April, check-in queues build quickly and two hours before departure is a sensible margin.
Thai AirAsia's basic fares include a cabin bag only. Checked luggage is an add-on, and it costs less when you buy it with the ticket than at the airport counter. If you are heading home to Isan with a suitcase of beach shopping, add the bag before you compare the fare with a one-stop ticket on a full-service airline.
Khon Kaen Airport is about 8 km north-west of the city centre, 15 to 20 minutes by road. A city bus serves the terminal from early morning until late evening, a shared limousine sells tickets before baggage claim, and taxis outside arrivals usually quote a flat price to the centre, so agree it before you set off. The terminal follows the aerodrome's working hours, roughly 06:00 to 22:00, which matters if your flight is delayed into the night.
The cool, dry months from November to February are the most comfortable time to be in Khon Kaen. March to May is hot, and the rains run from about May to October. Mid-April brings Songkran, when the city's water festival draws crowds from across the North-East and seats on every flight in or out sell early.
Phuket International Airport, run by Airports of Thailand, handled 17,474,051 passengers in 2025, of whom 6,636,760 flew domestic. Thai AirAsia flies from Phuket to Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen and Udon Thani.
Khon Kaen International Airport is a Department of Airports field with a long history. Thai Airways opened service on 6 February 1963 with a DC-3 carrying 28 passengers, and the airport gained customs status on 1 September 1991. A two billion baht upgrade enlarged the terminal from 16,500 to about 44,500 square metres, with capacity for about five million passengers a year. The runway is 3,050 m long and 45 m wide. In 2025 the airport handled 1,705,474 passengers.
Thai AirAsia was founded in November 2003 and began flying on 4 February 2004. It is a joint venture of Thailand's Asia Aviation, with about 55 percent, and Malaysia's AirAsia group, with about 45 percent. Its fleet in August 2025 numbered 62 Airbus aircraft, including 44 A320-200s and seven 236-seat A321neos, and Phuket is one of its seven operating bases.

Thai AirAsia is the only airline on the route, flying an Airbus A320 from Phuket's Domestic Terminal.
Basic Thai AirAsia fares include a 7 kg cabin bag only. Add checked luggage when you book, as it costs more at the airport.
Three things to plan around on a route with only a few departures.
Pick your travel day from the airline's calendar first and book rooms around it. A cancelled or missed flight here can mean a wait of several days, or a long detour via Bangkok.
Anything heavier goes in the hold, and checked bags are cheaper online at booking than at the Phuket counter. Weigh your bag before you leave the hotel.
Traffic on the roads north from Patong and Phuket Town can be slow in the afternoon. Leave an hour or more for the drive, and more in high season.

Getting there
Yes. Thai AirAsia flies nonstop between Phuket and Khon Kaen, and it is the only airline on the route. Every other option means changing planes in Bangkok.
About 1 hour 50 minutes in the air. The airports are around 1,048 km apart in a straight line, so this is one of the longer domestic flights in Thailand.
From the Domestic Terminal. Ask your driver for domestic departures; if you are dropped at the international building, the covered walkway between them takes about five minutes.
Two hours before departure is a safe margin. Between November and April the check-in halls get busy, and the drive from the southern beaches can take more than an hour.
About 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or limousine. The airport is around 8 km from the centre, which spreads around Central Khon Kaen and the lake.
Yes, which is unusual for Isan. A scheduled city bus runs roughly 07:30 to 22:30 between the terminal, the centre and the main bus terminal, the cheapest way in if you travel light.
No. The aerodrome works roughly from 06:00 to 22:00, and the terminal follows the flight schedule, so it is not a place to wait out the night.
What's included
Not on the basic fare, which covers a 7 kg cabin bag. Add a checked bag when you book or later online; paying at the airport counter costs more.
General
Yes. Fly Phuket to Bangkok, then on to Khon Kaen. Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air fly Don Mueang to Khon Kaen, while Thai Airways and Thai VietJet use Suvarnabhumi, so make sure both flights use the same Bangkok airport.
Very. Khon Kaen holds one of the biggest Songkran water festivals in the North-East in mid-April, and many people fly home for it. Book well ahead if your dates touch the holiday.
The dinosaur fossil sites at Phu Wiang and the Ubolratana Dam are both popular day trips. Public transport to them is patchy, so most visitors hire a car with a driver.
Timing & weather
The cool, dry months from November to February. Avoid March to May if heat bothers you, and expect rain between about May and October.
