Koh Samui to Bangkok flight guide
Flying from Koh Samui to Bangkok, your airline is Bangkok Airways, the only carrier on the nonstop route. Most flights land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), and the airline also flies Samui to Don Mueang (DMK). The 467 km flight takes about 1 hour.
The airport is close to the main beaches: about 2 km from the northern end of Chaweng, at Bo Phut on the north-east corner. From Lamai or the south coast it takes longer, so ask your hotel to book a car. Samui International Airport recommends arriving 90 minutes before a domestic flight, and Bangkok Airways closes domestic check-in 40 minutes before departure. Queues build at peak times, especially in the January to April high season.
Once checked in, Samui is a gentle place to wait. Every Bangkok Airways passenger can use the free courtesy corner in departures, with snacks, soft drinks and coffee, whatever the fare. The Blue Ribbon lounge takes business class passengers, eligible members and some lounge cards, and sells entry to others. Some flights board by walking or riding a tram across the apron, which can be damp in the October to December rains.
If Bangkok is only a connection, choose Suvarnabhumi. It is the hub for international flights, Bangkok Airways has lounges there, and a single ticket checks your bags through. The Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in about 26 minutes if you are staying in town, and the Hyatt Regency is linked to the terminal by an underground walkway for an early long-haul departure.
The Don Mueang flights suit travellers continuing on low-cost airlines from there, or staying in north Bangkok. Domestic arrivals use Terminal 2, and the SRT Red Line next to the airport runs to Krung Thep Aphiwat in about 20 minutes.
If fares from Samui look high, compare a ferry to Donsak and a flight from Surat Thani on a low-cost airline. It adds three to four hours, but the saving can be worth it for a group.
Samui's international terminal is about 50 m north of the domestic one, so you will not get lost. The airport has been open since April 1989 and is still privately owned by Bangkok Airways, which built it.
We check practical details such as entry rules, seasons and costs against official government and tourism sources.
