Koh Samui to Krabi flight guide
Bangkok Airways links Koh Samui (USM) and Krabi (KBV) with a nonstop turboprop flight of about 50 minutes, and no other airline flies the pair. The airports are some 200 km apart, but going overland means a ferry to the mainland and several hours by minivan, so the flight is the obvious choice when time is short.
The aircraft is an ATR 72, a twin-propeller plane with around 70 seats. It cruises lower than a jet, and on a clear day the views of the coast are good. Seats go quickly on such a small aircraft, especially from December to March, so book early if your dates are fixed.
Samui's airport is owned by Bangkok Airways and is made up of open-air pavilions in Bo Phut, on the island's north-east corner. Arrive about 90 minutes ahead; domestic check-in closes 40 minutes before departure. Every Bangkok Airways passenger can use the free courtesy corner airside for snacks and drinks. Standard economy fares include a checked bag, which matters if you have been island-hopping with a large case.
Krabi International Airport lies east of Krabi Town and was reorganised in 2025: a new domestic building, Terminal 3, opened alongside the renovated Terminals 1 and 2, and domestic flights use gates 8 to 14. Krabi Town is about 10 to 15 km away and Ao Nang 30 to 40 km, so you will need a vehicle. There are no meter taxis. Fixed-price taxis are sold at booths in arrivals, the airport bus runs through Krabi Town to Ao Nang and Noppharat Thara, stopping at most hotels, and shared minivans go on to Koh Lanta, crossing on the car ferry. Railay has no road access at all; take a longtail boat from Ao Nang.
Krabi's best weather is from November to April, when the Andaman Sea is calm enough for boat trips to Phi Phi and the nearby islands. Samui's own wet months are roughly October to December, so moving from Samui to Krabi late in the year often means trading rain for dry skies.
Bangkok Airways began as Sahakol Air in 1968 and has flown under its own name since 1989. It built and owns Samui Airport, which opened in April 1989, and also owns the airports at Sukhothai and Trat. In August 2025 its 23-aircraft fleet included Airbus A319s, Airbus A320s and ATR 72-600 turboprops. From Krabi, the airline flies to Suvarnabhumi as well as Koh Samui.
Samui International Airport has a single 2,100 m runway and separate open-air domestic and international terminals about 50 m apart. Bangkok Airways links it with both Bangkok airports, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Phuket and U-Tapao, and with Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
Krabi International Airport opened on 10 July 1999 and is run by the Department of Airports. Its 3,002 m runway serves several airlines: Thai AirAsia, Thai Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai VietJet all fly from Krabi to Bangkok, and Thai AirAsia also flies to Chiang Mai. The airport handled 3,053,553 passengers in 2025, up from 2,589,636 in 2024, though below the 4,339,599 of 2017. A 6.6 billion baht budget approved in 2018 covered the third terminal and renovations of the older buildings.

Standard economy includes a checked bag. With few seats per flight, fares rise as the plane fills.
Three tips for the short hop across.
With so few seats, the cheapest fares go first, especially over Christmas and New Year. If your dates are fixed, book as soon as you know them.
The bus meets arriving flights and drops at most hotels in Krabi Town and Ao Nang. A taxi is quicker but costs more for one or two people.
Railay is cut off by cliffs, so the last leg is a longtail boat from Ao Nang. Boats run in daylight and depend on the sea, so avoid a late flight if you are staying there.
The overland route is a ferry to the mainland and a long minivan ride across the peninsula, which takes most of a day.
