Krabi to Koh Samui flight guide
To get from Krabi (KBV) to Koh Samui (USM) in under an hour, you need Bangkok Airways, the only airline flying the route nonstop. Its ATR 72 turboprop covers about 200 km in roughly 50 minutes, crossing from the Andaman coast to the Gulf of Thailand.
Since the 2025 reorganisation, every passenger enters Krabi Airport through Terminal 1 and checks in on the third floor. Domestic flights board from gates 8 to 14. Allow two hours, especially between November and April when the airport is at its busiest. Bangkok Airways runs a Boutique Lounge airside in domestic departures, free for all its passengers, so there is somewhere quiet to wait. Cafés in the terminal close around 20:00.
Getting to the airport from Ao Nang takes about 40 minutes by car. The airport bus takes around an hour because it runs through Krabi Town, and the operator collects from hotels if you call the day before. From Krabi Town the airport is about 10 to 15 km away.
Bangkok Airways sells standard economy fares with a checked bag included, unlike Thailand's low-cost airlines. With only about 70 seats on the ATR 72, fares rise as the plane fills, and the route is popular with travellers combining both coasts in one trip. Book early for Christmas and New Year.
You arrive at Samui International Airport, owned and run by Bangkok Airways since it opened in 1989. It is small and open-air, and an open-sided tram usually carries passengers from the aircraft. The airport is in Bo Phut, around 2 km from the northern end of Chaweng; central Chaweng is 15 to 20 minutes by car. Taxis are sold at fixed zone prices at the arrivals counter, shared minibuses are cheaper but slower, and Grab works on the island. For Koh Phangan, Big Buddha Pier is a few minutes away; high-speed boats to Koh Tao leave from Maenam, about 6 km north-west.
Samui's rainiest months are roughly October to December, when the north-east monsoon brings heavy showers to the Gulf. January to around August is usually the better time for the beaches, which makes Samui a good second stop after a Krabi trip early in the year.
Krabi's airport opened on 10 July 1999 and is operated by the Department of Airports. Its single runway is 3,002 m long. The terminal was designed for three million passengers a year, a figure first passed in 2015; in 2025 the airport handled 3,053,553, the highest total since 2019. A 6.6 billion baht budget from 2018 covered the third terminal and renovations.
Domestic links from Krabi include Bangkok Airways to Suvarnabhumi and Koh Samui, Thai AirAsia to both Bangkok airports and Chiang Mai, and Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, Thai Airways and Thai VietJet to Bangkok.
Founded as Sahakol Air in 1968, Bangkok Airways took its current name in 1989 and opened Samui's airport the same year after building it from 1982. It has hubs at Suvarnabhumi and Samui and owns the Sukhothai and Trat airports too. Its fleet in August 2025 was 23 aircraft: Airbus A319s, A320s and ATR 72-600s.
Samui's runway is 2,100 m long. Besides Thai cities, the island has direct flights to Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and Scoot and Berjaya Air also fly in from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur's Subang airport.

Timing & weather
About 50 minutes. The overland alternative, by minivan and ferry, takes most of a day.

Yes. High-speed ferries to Koh Tao leave from Maenam, about 6 km north-west of the airport. A taxi to the pier is the simplest way.
Small and open-air, with thatched pavilions set in gardens instead of a terminal building. An open-sided tram usually takes passengers between the aircraft and the terminal.
Prices & payment
A combined minivan and ferry ticket via Donsak is usually cheaper than flying, but it takes most of a day.
