The 3,975 km flight takes about 5 hours 30 minutes, and it is the only direct link between Japan and the Thai north, useful for Japanese holidaymakers, long-stay visitors and anyone touring the region from Osaka or Kyoto.
Thai VietJet Air is the only airline on the route. It is a low-cost airline: the basic fare includes a cabin bag only, and checked bags, seats and meals cost extra. Buy them online at booking, where they are cheaper than at the airport.

The outbound VZ822 from Chiang Mai arrived at 07:55, so the aircraft turns round quickly. If you stay in Kyoto or central Osaka, plan an early start: the Nankai rapi:t runs to the airport from Namba and the JR Haruka from Kyoto and Shin-Osaka. Kansai has two terminals joined by a free shuttle bus, and low-cost airlines have used Terminal 2.

You land early in the afternoon, clear immigration in the international hall and are in town quickly. Thailand's entry rules vary by nationality; every foreign visitor completes the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before landing, and our Thailand visa page explains the current process. If you used the old 60-day exemption before, plan around 30 days now; since 15 September 2026 that is the visa-free stay for 60 countries and territories.
The airport sits just south-west of the old city. AOT, the airport operator, lists shuttle vans from Gate 12 of the international terminal at flat fares: 40 baht on route A1 to Nimmanhaemin, Huay Kaew and the moat, 40 baht on route A2 to Mahidol Road, the Night Bazaar and Chang Khlan Road, and 60 baht on route A3 to Ring Road 2. The yellow and red city bus lines run from 06:00 to 23:30, and a taxi or Grab takes 15 to 20 minutes to most hotels. Car rental desks are on the first floor.
November to February is Chiang Mai's cool season, with warm days and evenings as cool as about 10°C, and it is when the city is busiest. April is hot, up to about 40°C, and frequent rain falls from roughly June to October.
Turn your watch back two hours on landing (Japan is UTC+9, Thailand UTC+7). For trips beyond Thailand, fly from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and connect there; Suvarnabhumi has flights across Asia, including to South Asia (see Bangkok to Dhaka flights).
