Chiang Mai to Osaka flight guide
Thai VietJet Air flies nonstop from Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) in northern Thailand to Kansai International Airport (KIX), Osaka's main airport. The 3,975 km flight takes about 5 hours 30 minutes and is the only nonstop between northern Thailand and Japan, which suits holidaymakers heading to Osaka and Kyoto and Japanese visitors returning home.
Thai VietJet Air is the only airline on the route. It is a low-cost airline, so the basic fare covers a cabin bag only. Add checked baggage when you book, and pre-order a meal online if you want to eat on a flight this long, since food is sold separately.
The schedule is built around an overnight departure. In the 2025 timetable, flight VZ822 left Chiang Mai at 00:35 and reached Kansai at 07:55, with the return VZ823 leaving Osaka at 08:55 and landing in Chiang Mai at 12:50, both on an Airbus A320. That pattern lets you spend a last full day in Chiang Mai and arrive in Osaka with the morning ahead of you, though you will want a seat you can sleep in.
Frequency changes with the season. Thai VietJet ran four flights a week between April and August 2024 and three a week in September and October that year, and it scheduled three a week from June to October 2025. Search your dates before planning the rest of a Japan itinerary around a particular day.
Chiang Mai airport is just south-west of the old city. The airport authority, AOT, runs shuttle vans to the terminal at flat fares from Gate 12 of the international terminal: 40 baht on route A1 (Nimmanhaemin, Huay Kaew and the moat), 40 baht on route A2 (Mahidol Road, the Night Bazaar and Chang Khlan Road) and 60 baht on route A3 (Ring Road 2). The Chiang Mai City Bus yellow and red lines run from 06:00 to 23:30. The city bus stops at 23:30, so for a 00:35 departure a taxi or Grab is the practical choice; it takes 15 to 20 minutes from most old-city and Nimman hotels. AOT asks passengers to arrive at least two hours before departure, and check-in for international flights closes well before take-off.
Kansai International Airport is on an island in Osaka Bay. The Nankai rapi:t runs to Namba in southern Osaka, and the JR Haruka limited express serves Shin-Osaka and Kyoto. Kansai has two terminals linked by a free shuttle bus, and low-cost airlines have used Terminal 2, so check yours before you head back for the return flight.
Japan's entry rules depend on nationality. Many passports qualify for short visa-free visits, while others need a visa issued in advance, so confirm with the Japanese embassy or consulate that covers you.
Chiang Mai's cool, dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time to start the trip, with evenings that can drop to about 10°C. April brings heat up to about 40°C, and the rains run roughly from June to October.
Japan is two hours ahead of Thailand all year (UTC+9 against UTC+7). Travellers from elsewhere in Asia usually reach Chiang Mai through Bangkok; see our Dhaka to Bangkok flights page for one example of a connection, then fly or take the train north.
