Surat Thani to Bangkok flight guide
Surat Thani is where many island holidays end. A number of low-cost airlines fly nonstop to Bangkok: several airlines land at Don Mueang (DMK), and Thai VietJet Air lands at Suvarnabhumi (BKK). The flight covers about 555 km and takes roughly 1 hour 10 minutes.
Coming back from Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao, the usual route is a combination ticket: ferry to the mainland, then a coach that drops you at Surat Thani International Airport. These tickets are sold on the islands and timed around the boats, so pick a flight that leaves well after the coach is due, and allow for rough seas from October to December. From Surat Thani town, the airport is about 21 km west in Phunphin district, around 30 minutes by road, and an airport bus also connects the two. The Surat Thani airport guide has more.
The terminal is simple: check-in on the ground floor, a restaurant, coffee shop and snack kiosks on the first floor, and fewer outlets airside, so eat before you go through security. There is no left luggage and no bank exchange counter, though there are ATMs.
Multiple airlines fly to Don Mueang, where domestic flights arrive in Terminal 2. The SRT Red Line across the footbridge reaches Krung Thep Aphiwat in about 20 minutes, and airport buses and taxis also run into the city; see the Don Mueang airport guide. If you are flying home from Thailand, Thai VietJet Air's Suvarnabhumi flight saves a cross-town transfer, and the Suvarnabhumi airport guide explains the terminal. Landing at Don Mueang with an international flight from Suvarnabhumi the same day, you can use the free shuttle from Terminal 1, Gate 6, but leave at least four hours between flights.
Every airline on this route is low-cost, and the cheapest fares include only a cabin bag. Holiday luggage usually needs a checked bag, which costs less when bought online in advance than at the Surat Thani counter.
The Gulf side is mostly dry from January to August. October to December is the wet season, when ferries can be delayed and a later flight gives you more room.
Surat Thani International has handled more than two million passengers a year, which puts it tenth in Thailand. It has run since 15 April 1981 on one 2,500 m runway, and the 21 km from the city means you should not leave the ride from town until the last minute.

What's included
Not on the cheapest fares. All the airlines are low-cost and sell checked bags as an extra, cheaper online than at the airport.
