Flying from Trang to Bangkok

In short

Every scheduled flight out of Trang goes to the same place: Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK). Various airlines share the route, and the 720 km trip takes about an hour and 25 minutes. There are no direct flights from Trang to Phuket, Chiang Mai or anywhere abroad, so onward trips connect in Bangkok.

Trang Airport from town and the Koh Mook, Kradan and Ngai boats

Trang Airport is at Khok Lo, about 7 km south of town, roughly 15 minutes by car. Coming off the islands, plan backwards from your flight. Boats from Koh Mook, Kradan and Ngai land at Pak Meng or Hat Yao, both within about an hour of the airport, and rough seas in the May to October monsoon can delay or cancel crossings. A night in Trang town before an early flight removes the risk. From Koh Lanta, minivans take two and a half to three hours including the car ferry.

Check in at the new terminal, which replaced the old building in September 2025 and is sized for about 1,200 passengers an hour. Arrive 90 minutes to two hours before departure; low-cost airlines close check-in exactly on time.

Dark Red Line or bus A4 from Don Mueang Terminal 2

Domestic flights arrive at Terminal 2 of Don Mueang, about 24 km north of central Bangkok. The SRT Dark Red Line, across the footbridge from the terminals, reaches Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in about 20 minutes. Airport bus A4 runs to Democracy Monument and Khao San Road, and A3 to Pratunam and Lumphini Park. For a taxi, take a queue slip at the Level 1 rank by Gate 8; the meter runs and the airport fee and tolls are added.

Allowing time for the shuttle to Suvarnabhumi

Long-haul flights mostly leave from Suvarnabhumi, on the other side of Bangkok. Don Mueang's free shuttle covers the transfer for passengers with an onward ticket, but traffic makes the timing unpredictable, so choose a Trang departure that leaves several hours of slack.

All the airlines price checked baggage separately on their lowest fares. If you are carrying dive or snorkelling gear back from the islands, add it when you book.

Trang Airport since 1954 and its new terminal

Trang's airport at Khok Lo has carried passengers since 13 December 1954. The Department of Airports operates it. The current domestic terminal opened on 5 September 2025 after nearly five years of delays, and the 2,100 m runway is due to be lengthened to 2,990 m, with completion now expected in 2028.

In 2024 the airport handled 559,844 passengers, slightly fewer than the year before, and 152.77 tonnes of freight. Every one of those passengers flew to or from Don Mueang, the only destination on the board.

Which aircraft you will board

Thai AirAsia flies Airbus A320s and A321neos, Thai Lion Air flies Boeing 737-800s and 737-900ERs, and Nok Air flies 189-seat Boeing 737-800s. Thai Lion Air has been flying since December 2013 and belongs to Indonesia's Lion Air Group; Nok Air began in July 2004, and Thai AirAsia in February 2004. In August 2025 Thai Lion Air had 28 Boeing 737s in service and Thai AirAsia 62 Airbus jets, so between them they put plenty of seats on Don Mueang routes like this one.

A busy airfield shared with the Royal Thai Air Force

Don Mueang is the base for all the airlines, and it is busy: 31.65 million passengers in 2025, more than 19 million of them domestic. Royal Thai Air Force aircraft share the airfield, which opened as an air base in 1914 and took its first airline flight in 1924. A third terminal is in the plans.

For travel before Christmas 2026, leave Nok Air out of your search: it has stopped flying Trang to Don Mueang from 27 October to 20 December 2026 while jet fuel prices are high.
