Flying from Ubon Ratchathani to Bangkok

In short

Ubon Ratchathani has several airlines flying nonstop to Bangkok. Multiple airlines land at Don Mueang (DMK); two land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK). It is a flight of roughly 1 hour 5 minutes over about 482 km, against nine hours or more by train.

The quickest airport in this part of Thailand to get through is a real advantage. Ubon Ratchathani Airport is on the northern edge of the city, so most hotels are 10 to 15 minutes away, and check-in rarely takes long. The terminal has coffee counters, snack bars, souvenir shops and a post counter, but no large restaurant, and airside there is only a small shop and a coffee bar. It closes overnight, roughly 22:00 to 06:00. If you are travelling back from Pakse, remember the border at Chong Mek and the road to Ubon before picking a departure. Read the Ubon Ratchathani airport guide for the details.

Red Line from Don Mueang or onward from Suvarnabhumi

Don Mueang suits a stay in Bangkok: Terminal 2 receives domestic flights, and the Red Line next door reaches Krung Thep Aphiwat in about 20 minutes. Airport buses and taxis also run into the city. The Don Mueang airport guide lists them all. Suvarnabhumi is better for onward international flights, especially with Thai Airways International on a through ticket; Thai Airways' winter 2026/27 schedule has 14 Ubon flights a week. The Suvarnabhumi airport guide covers the Airport Rail Link and the taxi rank.

Fitting Ubon silk and cotton into your allowance

Low-cost fares on Nok Air, Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Thai VietJet Air usually cover a cabin bag only. Thai Airways economy fares include a checked bag. If you bought Ubon's hand-woven cotton or silk, check that it fits your allowance before you leave for the airport.

Sunday commuters and the post-Candle Festival rush

Bangkok is hottest from March to May and wettest from June to October, when afternoon storms can delay arrivals. Sunday evening flights from Ubon fill with weekly commuters, and the days after the July Candle Festival are among the busiest of the year.

From air base to civil airport

The airport you leave from was Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base until 1975, when it became an international civilian airport with flights to Vietnam. Those did not pay, and for several years the airport has had only domestic flights.
