Hat Yai to Chiang Mai flight guide
From Hat Yai (HDY), Thai AirAsia flies straight to Chiang Mai (CNX) without the usual change in Bangkok. It is a long domestic flight by Thai standards, about 1,325 km and roughly 2 hours 10 minutes, and the only nonstop option between the two cities.
Hat Yai International Airport lies 10 to 12 km south-west of the centre on Highway 4135, so allow 20 to 30 minutes by taxi, more in evening traffic. The terminal opens at 06:00 and closes at midnight, so there is no waiting inside overnight for an early departure. Arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight; the building was designed for fewer passengers than it now handles, and queues build at peak times. Inside you will find ATMs, an exchange counter and one pay-in lounge, but little else to fill a long wait.
Chiang Mai International Airport is one of the closest major airports to a city centre in Thailand, about 3 km from the Old City moat. The taxi counter in the arrivals hall sells fixed-fare rides to most city addresses, Grab and Bolt pick up outside Exit 2, and the air-conditioned RTC bus route 24 runs two loops, towards the Night Bazaar and Tha Phae Gate or towards Nimman, from about 07:15 to 19:10.
The cool months from November to February are Chiang Mai's high season, with Yi Peng and Loy Krathong filling the city with lanterns in November. From about February to April, smoke from crop and forest burning often brings haze. If you are escaping Hat Yai's October to December rains, late November to January is the best match for both cities.
Thai AirAsia's basic fares include a 7 kg cabin allowance only. Add checked baggage at booking if you need it; buying it later at the airport costs more. With only one airline flying nonstop, the alternative is a connection through Bangkok, on Thai Airways via Suvarnabhumi or on Thai AirAsia via Don Mueang, which adds time but widens the choice of departure times.
Hat Yai International Airport (HDY) is run by Airports of Thailand and handled 3,305,661 passengers in 2025. The building was designed for 2.5 million a year and was already carrying 4.5 million by 2018, and an expansion plan aims to lift capacity above 10 million passengers by 2030. The airfield has one 3,150 m runway and seven taxiways, and road access is via Highway 4135, Sanambin Panij Road.
Hat Yai's other domestic links include Thai Lion Air to Udon Thani, Bangkok Airways to Phuket and EZY Airlines to Betong and Hua Hin, alongside the many flights to both Bangkok airports.
Chiang Mai International Airport is owned by the Royal Thai Air Force and operated by Airports of Thailand. It has been open 24 hours a day since April 2014 and handled 9.52 million passengers in 2025, of whom about 6.95 million were domestic and 2.57 million international. Thai AirAsia links it with nine Thai airports, from Hat Yai and Krabi to Udon Thani and Khon Kaen.
Thai AirAsia counts Hat Yai and Chiang Mai among its seven operating bases. It started flying on 4 February 2004 and in August 2025 had 62 Airbus aircraft in service and seven more on order. Seat counts range from 180 on an A320-200 to 236 on an A321neo. Thailand's Asia Aviation owns about 55 percent of the company and Malaysia's AirAsia group about 45 percent.

Three tips for the flight north.
Yi Peng and Loy Krathong bring crowds to Chiang Mai in November. Seats on the single nonstop and hotel rooms both go early.
The air-conditioned bus runs loops to the Night Bazaar and Nimman during the day. Larger suitcases pay a small extra charge.
Smoke from fires in the hills often settles over Chiang Mai. If you are sensitive to it, travel earlier in the year.
Most visitors stay inside or close to the Old City moat, around Nimman or near the Night Bazaar.

Yes. Grab and Bolt both pick up at a marked area outside Exit 2. Grab's airport fare is usually close to the taxi counter price.
There is one pay-in lounge, the Coral lounge. Otherwise the terminal has ATMs, an exchange counter and free WiFi, but few ways to fill a long wait.
An air-conditioned city bus, route 24, running two loops: 24L towards the Night Bazaar and Tha Phae Gate, and 24R towards Suan Dok and Nimman. It runs from about 07:15 to 19:10.

For a first visit, the fixed-fare taxi counter in arrivals is simplest, 10 to 20 minutes to most Old City guesthouses. Grab and Bolt meet passengers at Exit 2, and RTC bus route 24 is the budget option by day.
Yes. Thai AirAsia connects via Don Mueang and Thai Airways via Suvarnabhumi. It takes longer than the nonstop but gives more choice of times.
Timing & weather
Usually in November, on the full moon of the twelfth Thai lunar month, alongside Loy Krathong. The exact dates change each year, so check before booking.
Between about February and April, quite possibly. Crop and forest burning brings haze to the north. November to January is usually clear.
