Flying from Hat Yai to Kuala Lumpur

In short

Thai AirAsia flies nonstop from Hat Yai International Airport (HDY) in Songkhla province, southern Thailand, to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). The 488 km flight takes about 1 hour 5 minutes, which makes it the fastest way between Thailand's deep south and the Malaysian capital. Shoppers, students and families with ties on both sides of the border use it heavily.

Thai AirAsia's nonstop, cabin bag only

Thai AirAsia is the only airline flying nonstop. It is a low-cost carrier, so the basic fare includes a cabin bag and nothing else. Checked luggage, meals and seat choice are added online, at lower prices than at the airport. Check the search above for the days the flight operates.

60-baht minibus and other cheap rides to the airport

Hat Yai International Airport is south-west of the city. Airports of Thailand lists several cheap ways to reach it. A minibus line costs 60 baht and runs daily from 06:00 to 23:30, calling at Kaset Market, Kim Yong Market, Hat Yai College, Prince of Songkla University, Central Festival and the Hat Yai bus terminal. The airport van costs 100 baht and stops at Sanamanusorn, Central Festival, Lee Garden Hat Yai and Kim Yong Market. Taxis and shared minivans take about 20 to 30 minutes from the centre.

A single terminal handles domestic and international flights. Airports of Thailand advises arriving at least two hours before departure, and the AOT call centre on 1722 can answer questions.

KLIA Terminal 2 and the KLIA Ekspres

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is in Sepang, about 45 km south of the city. AirAsia group flights use Terminal 2, while Malaysia Airlines uses Terminal 1. The KLIA Ekspres runs from both terminals to KL Sentral in about half an hour, and buses and e-hailing cars are also available.

Entry rules for Malaysia depend on your passport. Many nationalities enter visa-free, and all foreign visitors complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online before landing. See our Malaysia visa page.

Crossing by road and the two-a-year land limit

Hat Yai is close to the Malaysian border, and many travellers cross by road. Under Thailand's visa exemption rules from 15 September 2026, most foreigners using the 30-day exemption can enter by land no more than twice a calendar year, though the limit does not apply to citizens of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia or Singapore. Flying avoids the question for anyone near that limit.

Dhaka through Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur

Hat Yai has no flights to Dhaka, so travellers starting in South Asia usually reach it through Bangkok (see Dhaka to Bangkok flights). Kuala Lumpur has its own service to Dhaka: see Dhaka to Kuala Lumpur flights.
