Hat Yai to Phuket flight guide
The quickest way from Hat Yai (HDY) to Phuket (HKT) is Bangkok Airways' nonstop flight: about an hour in the air for a distance of 264 km. It is the only airline on the route, which it has flown since 2015, with a pause during the pandemic and a restart in March 2021.
Hat Yai's airport is 10 to 12 km south-west of the city and keeps 06:00 to midnight hours. From the centre, take the city minibus from Hat Yai Bus Terminal, the airport van or a taxi, allowing 20 to 30 minutes. Airports of Thailand asks for two hours before departure, and all bags are scanned at the door, which causes queues on Friday and Sunday evenings. The Coral Executive Lounge is on level 2 near gates 4 to 6, and boarding at Hat Yai is often by walking or bus across the apron, so be at the gate when it opens.
Bangkok Airways sells full-service economy, so a checked bag and a snack are part of standard fares. Promotional fares can differ, so read the conditions before you pay.
The flight lands at the Domestic Terminal of Phuket International Airport, at Mai Khao on the island's north-west coast. Your options from the kerb:
For a late landing, the resorts at Nai Yang, just south of the runway, are the closest beds.
The two cities have opposite wet seasons. Hat Yai's heaviest rain usually comes from October to December; Phuket's west coast is wettest from May to October, when seas are rough and red flags fly on the beaches. January to April is dry in both places and the best time for a beach trip from Hat Yai.
Airports of Thailand runs Hat Yai International Airport, which handled 3,305,661 passengers in 2025, up 6.7 percent on 2024. The building was planned for 2.5 million passengers a year and was already serving 4.5 million in 2018, and a long-term expansion aims at more than 10 million by 2030. The 3,150 m runway has seven taxiways and an apron of about 56,000 square metres.
Besides this Phuket service, domestic flights from Hat Yai go to both Bangkok airports, Chiang Mai, Udon Thani, Betong and Hua Hin.
Bangkok Airways traces back to Sahakol Air, founded in 1968, and has flown as Bangkok Airways since 1989. It owns and runs Samui Airport and also owns the airports at Sukhothai and Trat. In August 2025 it had 23 aircraft, a mix of Airbus A319s, A320s and ATR 72-600 turboprops; the ATR is the type listed for this route.
Phuket handled 17,474,051 passengers in 2025, including 6,636,760 domestic travellers. The airport is in Mai Khao, Thalang district, about 32 km north of Phuket Town, with a single 3,000 m runway and separate domestic (Terminal 3) and international (Terminal 2) buildings. From Phuket, Bangkok Airways also flies to Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui and U-Tapao.

Standard economy fares include a checked bag. Promotional fares may differ, so check the conditions before paying.
Three things to sort before leaving Hat Yai.
Every bag is scanned as you enter Hat Yai's terminal, and the line grows on Friday and Sunday evenings. Arrive with time to spare.
Boarding at Hat Yai is often on foot or by bus across the apron, so gates close promptly. Wait nearby rather than in the café.
The Smart Bus leaves from outside the Domestic Terminal, where you land. Gaps between buses can be long, so check the next departure before choosing it over a taxi.
