Chiang Mai to Hat Yai flight guide
Thai AirAsia is the only airline flying nonstop between Chiang Mai (CNX) and Hat Yai (HDY). The flight spans about 1,325 km, from the mountains of the north almost to the Malaysian border, and takes roughly 2 hours 10 minutes. Every other option means changing planes in Bangkok.
That saving is the main reason to book it. A connection through Bangkok usually adds a couple of hours at least, more if the two legs are on separate tickets, and going overland is a long day and night. With only one airline on the nonstop, you are comparing dates rather than carriers: fares move with demand, and around Thai holidays the seats go early.
Chiang Mai International Airport is about 4 km south-west of the city centre and 3 km from the Old City moat, so even from Nimman or the Night Bazaar the ride takes 10 to 20 minutes outside rush hour. Domestic and international flights share one building, with check-in on the ground floor and the gates upstairs.
Hat Yai International Airport is 10 to 12 km south-west of the city along Highway 4135. The Airport Van from the arrivals exit runs to Central Festival, Lee Garden and Kim Yong Market, and the city minibus goes on to Hat Yai Bus Terminal for vans to Songkhla, Satun and the border. A taxi counter in arrivals, between gates 7 and 8, books the 20 to 30 minute ride to the centre. The airport opens at 06:00 and closes at midnight.
Thai AirAsia's lowest fares include a 7 kg cabin allowance only, so add a checked bag when you book if you are carrying more.
The two ends of this route have different weather. Chiang Mai is at its best from November to February. Hat Yai, on the Gulf side of the south, gets its heaviest rain from about October to December, and the city has flooded badly in some years. January and February suit both: the north is still cool and the south has dried out. From around March, smoke from crop and forest burning often hangs over Chiang Mai.
Both ends are run by Airports of Thailand. Chiang Mai International Airport sits on a Royal Thai Air Force airfield, has operated around the clock since April 2014 and handled 9.52 million passengers in 2025, about 6.95 million of them on domestic flights. Thai AirAsia flies from there to nine Thai airports, Hat Yai among them. International traffic accounted for about 2.57 million of the 2025 total.
Hat Yai International Airport handled 3,305,661 passengers in 2025, up 6.7 percent, from a terminal designed for 2.5 million a year, and an expansion is planned to lift capacity above 10 million by 2030. Its runway is 3,150 m long, and the airport is about 43 km from Songkhla city. From Hat Yai, Thai AirAsia flies to Chiang Mai and both Bangkok airports, Thai Lion Air to Udon Thani, and Bangkok Airways to Phuket.
Thai AirAsia was founded in November 2003 and flew its first service in February 2004. It counts both Chiang Mai and Hat Yai among its operating bases, along with Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Rai, Krabi and Phuket. In August 2025 its fleet was 62 Airbus jets, mostly 180-seat A320-200s, with A320neos and 236-seat A321neos. The company is about 55 percent owned by Asia Aviation of Thailand and 45 percent by Malaysia's AirAsia group.
