Phuket to Hat Yai flight guide
Phuket (HKT) to Hat Yai (HDY) is a Bangkok Airways route; no other airline flies it nonstop. The two airports are just 264 km apart, and the flight takes about an hour on the airline's turboprops. Bangkok Airways first opened the route in 2015 and brought it back in March 2021 after the pandemic pause.
For a short sector it saves a surprising amount of time: by road the trip runs across the peninsula and round the coast, which makes for a long day on the bus. Flying, you can leave Phuket after lunch and be eating dim sum in Hat Yai by evening.
Bangkok Airways sells full-service economy, so standard fares include a checked bag and a snack on board. Before boarding in Phuket, every Bangkok Airways passenger can use the airline's Boutique Lounge in the Domestic Terminal, economy included.
The flight leaves from Phuket's Domestic Terminal, five minutes' walk from the International Terminal along a covered walkway. The airport is at Mai Khao in the north of the island, about 38 km from Patong and 32 km from Phuket Town; allow at least an hour from the southern beaches. Between November and April, plan on two hours at the airport.
Hat Yai International Airport is 10 to 12 km south-west of the city centre and closes from midnight to 06:00. Arrivals have several ways into town: the taxi counter between gates 7 and 8, the AOT Limousine desk with fixed prices, the Airport Van to Central Festival, Lee Garden and Kim Yong Market, and the city minibus to Hat Yai Bus Terminal. Most hotels are 20 to 30 minutes away. Songkhla and its beach at Samila are about 45 minutes by car, and the Sadao crossing to Malaysia roughly an hour.
The two ends have different rainy seasons. Phuket's west coast is wettest from May to October, while Hat Yai on the Gulf side usually gets its heaviest rain from October to December. January to April is the most reliable window for both.
Bangkok Airways started out as Sahakol Air in 1968 and took its current name in 1989. It owns the airports at Samui, Sukhothai and Trat and bases its network at Suvarnabhumi and Samui. Its 23-aircraft fleet (August 2025) mixes Airbus A319s and A320s with ATR 72-600 turboprops, the type listed for this route. From Phuket, the airline also flies to Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui and U-Tapao for Pattaya.
Phuket International Airport is an Airports of Thailand operation that handled 17,474,051 passengers in 2025. Domestic flights use Terminal 3; international flights use Terminal 2, and charters a separate Terminal X opened in 2014. The runway is 3,000 m long.
Hat Yai International Airport, also run by Airports of Thailand, carried 3,305,661 passengers in 2025. Its terminal was built for 2.5 million a year and passed 4.5 million in 2018, and an expansion aimed at more than 10 million by 2030 is planned. The runway is 3,150 m. Hat Yai is about 43 km from Songkhla city, and the access road is Highway 4135, Sanambin Panij Road. If you need another way out, Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air, Nok Air, Thai VietJet and Thai Airways connect Hat Yai with Bangkok. The airport counted 3,098,213 passengers in 2024, so 2025 was a growth year.
