Bangkok to Khon Kaen flight guide
Khon Kaen is under an hour from Bangkok by air, and several airlines fly it nonstop. A few airlines leave from Suvarnabhumi (BKK); two leave from Don Mueang (DMK). The cities are about 378 km apart in a straight line and the flight takes around 55 minutes.
Khon Kaen is the commercial and university centre of Isan, home to Khon Kaen University and a growing conference trade, so weekday flights fill with business travellers and students as much as tourists. Thai Airways gives the route real depth from Suvarnabhumi, with 28 flights a week in its winter 2026/27 schedule. Thai AirAsia treats Khon Kaen as its North-East base, which is why it also flies from here to Chiang Mai and Phuket.
If you are flying in from abroad, Suvarnabhumi is the obvious choice: a Thai Airways or Thai VietJet Air connection keeps you in one airport. From inside Bangkok, compare the journey to each airport before comparing fares. Don Mueang is closer to the north of the city and has its own Red Line station, while Suvarnabhumi is linked to Phaya Thai by the Airport Rail Link. Our Suvarnabhumi guide and Don Mueang guide cover both.
The airport is in Ban Pet, about 8 km north-west of the city centre and just off Highway 12 towards Loei. Everything happens in one four-storey terminal, rebuilt so that it now feels roomy and is rarely crowded. Arrivals and the transport counters are on the lower floors. A city bus runs into town from about 07:30 to 22:30, taxis charge a flat fare for the 15 to 20 minute ride, and limousine and car hire desks sit in the arrivals hall. The airport closes at night, roughly from 22:00 to 06:00. More detail is in our Khon Kaen airport guide.
Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Thai VietJet Air price their lowest fares without checked baggage; Thai Airways includes a bag in economy. For a short business trip with cabin luggage, the low-cost fares are hard to beat. For a longer stay, add the bag at booking.
November to February is cool and dry in Isan and the best time to visit. March to May is hot, and the rainy season runs from about June to October. Khon Kaen's silk fair around the turn of the year is a busy period for hotels.
The airport lies roughly 8 km west of the city centre and belongs to the Department of Airports. Its single runway is 3,050 m long, long enough for jets of any size on this route, and it handled around two million passengers in 2017.
We check practical details such as entry rules, seasons and costs against official government and tourism sources.
Rival airlines fly nonstop from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to Khon Kaen (KKC), and two fly from Don Mueang (DMK). The 378 km flight takes about 55 minutes.
