Krabi to Chiang Mai flight guide
Finishing on the beach and heading north? Thai AirAsia's nonstop from Krabi (KBV) to Chiang Mai (CNX) does the 1,186 km in about 2 hours and is the only direct link between the Andaman coast around Krabi and northern Thailand. Every other option means a change in Bangkok.
Allow more time than you think. From Ao Nang the airport is 30 to 40 km away, and the airport bus loops through Krabi Town and stops at hotels on the way, so it is much slower than a taxi. For a pickup at your hotel, call the operator's hotline the day before, or wait at a stop in Ao Nang. From Koh Lanta, the minivans include a car ferry crossing and take 2.5 to 3 hours.
Inside, everyone enters through Terminal 1 and checks in at Zone A or B on the third floor. Domestic flights leave from Gates 8 to 14. Cafés and shops generally close around 20:00, so eat before an evening departure.
The contrast is the point of this trip. Chiang Mai International Airport is about 3 km from the Old City moat, so the hard part of the journey ends at the baggage belt. The flat-fare taxi counter in arrivals covers most city addresses, Grab and Bolt pick up outside Exit 2, and the RTC bus route 24 runs in daytime to the Old City and Nimman. Left luggage is handled by a counter on the ground floor if you want to explore before checking in. Read the Chiang Mai International Airport guide before you land.
Thai AirAsia's basic fare is cabin baggage only. If your bag has grown during a beach holiday, add checked luggage online before the trip; it costs more at the airport.
From November to February, Chiang Mai is cool and dry, and you will want a jumper for the evenings and for any trip up Doi Suthep. February to April is hot and often hazy from agricultural and forest fires, with poor air on the worst days and the occasional delay. The rains last from about June to October. Krabi's own dry season, November to April, overlaps well with Chiang Mai's best months, which is why the route is busiest in winter.
Flying this way round also suits a trip that ends with an international flight: Chiang Mai has direct services to several Asian cities, and the domestic and international sides share one building.
Krabi International Airport, run by the Department of Airports, has handled flights since 10 July 1999 from a single 3,002 m runway. It carried 3,053,553 passengers in 2025, the highest total since 2019, though still below the 4,339,599 of 2017. The original terminal was designed for three million passengers a year, and traffic has passed that figure in several years.
Chiang Mai International Airport is owned by the Royal Thai Air Force and operated by Airports of Thailand. It has opened 24 hours a day since April 2014 and handled 9,517,206 passengers in 2025, 6.95 million of them domestic. Thai AirAsia flies from Chiang Mai to nine Thai airports. Krabi's own route map is mostly Bangkok: Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways and Thai VietJet to Suvarnabhumi, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air to Don Mueang, and Thai AirAsia to both.
Thai AirAsia started flying on 4 February 2004 and treats both Krabi and Chiang Mai as operating bases. Its 62 aircraft in August 2025 were all Airbus: A320-200s, A320neos and A321neos.

What to sort out before you leave the coast.
The airport bus loops through Krabi Town and stops at hotels, so it is slower than a taxi. Leave plenty of time, especially for a morning flight.
Food at Krabi Airport winds down in the evening. Bring something to eat if your departure is late.
Chiang Mai evenings in the cool season feel cold after the beach, and the hills around Doi Suthep are colder still.
Overland, the journey goes through Bangkok and takes well over a day, so flying nonstop is the obvious choice.

By fixed-price taxi in about 40 minutes, or by the airport bus, which loops through Krabi Town and is slower. For a hotel pickup by bus, call the operator the day before.
Only limited choice. Most cafés close around 20:00, so eat beforehand if you are on a late departure.
A taxi from the flat-fare counter in arrivals, or Grab or Bolt from outside Exit 2. Either takes 10 to 20 minutes.
Shared vans drop passengers at hotels in set zones and leave when full, from the international side. The service has been suspended at times, so have a back-up plan.

Expect it. Low-cost carriers check cabin bag weight at check-in, so pack anything heavy into a paid checked bag.
General
If air quality matters to you, yes. February to April is the burning season, when smoke can make the air very poor and occasionally delays flights.
