Chiang Mai to Krabi flight guide
Two hours in the air takes you from the hills of the north to limestone cliffs and the Andaman Sea. Thai AirAsia flies nonstop from Chiang Mai (CNX) to Krabi (KBV), a straight-line distance of about 1,186 km, in roughly 2 hours. It is the only airline on the route.
Without it, the trip means changing planes in Bangkok, so the nonstop saves several hours. The route is busiest in the dry season and was trimmed during the quieter months of 2026, so check how many departures your dates offer before settling on a plan.
Krabi International Airport is about 10 to 15 km from Krabi Town and 30 to 40 km from Ao Nang. A new domestic building opened in 2025 alongside the renovated older terminals; domestic flights use Gates 8 to 14. There are no meter taxis. Instead you choose from booths in the arrivals hall:
Railay has no road access: you take a longtail boat from Ao Nang, and the boats stop at dusk and may not run in rough monsoon weather. Land in the afternoon and you may need a night in Ao Nang first. See the Krabi airport guide for the full set of options.
Chiang Mai's airport is about 15 minutes from the Old City and stays open around the clock, though most outlets close late in the evening. Thai AirAsia's basic fares include cabin baggage only, so add a checked bag online if you are bringing snorkel gear or a big case. Cabin bags are weighed strictly at check-in.
Krabi's dry season runs from about November to April, with calm seas for island trips. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings heavy showers and choppier water, and some boat services are cut back. Pair the trip with the cool months up north and you avoid both the Chiang Mai haze in spring and the wettest weeks on the coast.
Krabi International Airport opened on 10 July 1999 and is run by the Department of Airports. Its runway is about 3,000 m long. Passenger numbers have recovered strongly: 3,053,553 in 2025, against a low of 405,432 in 2021 and a peak of 4.34 million in 2017. A 6.6 billion baht budget approved in 2018 covered a third terminal and renovations of the older ones. Traffic in 2024 was 2,589,636, so 2025 added close to half a million passengers.
Several airlines fly in from Bangkok, and Bangkok Airways links Krabi with Koh Samui, but Thai AirAsia is the only airline connecting Krabi with Chiang Mai. Both cities are among the airline's operating bases.
Thai AirAsia flies Airbus A320-family jets with 180 to 236 seats. It was founded in November 2003 and is owned about 55 percent by Asia Aviation and 45 percent by Malaysia's AirAsia. At the Chiang Mai end, Airports of Thailand handled 9.52 million passengers in 2025 at an airport open around the clock since April 2014.

Three tips for getting from the north to the beach in one go.
The airport bus stops at most Ao Nang hotels if you tell the driver the name when you board. Have it written in English or Thai.
Longtails from Ao Nang to Railay stop at dusk and may not run in monsoon weather. A late landing can mean a night in Ao Nang.
Bus, taxi and minivan prices are fixed and posted at the arrivals booths. Ignore offers from people outside.
There is no practical overland alternative: by road or rail the trip goes through Bangkok and takes well over a day.
