Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang flight guide
Lao Airlines flies nonstop from Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) in northern Thailand to Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ) in Laos. The 358 km flight takes about 55 minutes, which makes it the fastest way between two of the region's most visited old towns and a popular choice for travellers on a northern Thailand and Laos loop.
Lao Airlines is the only airline on the route. It is the Lao national carrier and a full-service airline, so a checked bag is normally included in economy; the allowance on your ticket is the one that applies. Special meals, including Muslim meals, can be requested at least 24 hours before departure.
Chiang Mai airport is just south-west of the old city. AOT, which runs it, lists flat-fare shuttle vans that use Gate 12 of the international terminal: 40 baht on route A1 (Nimmanhaemin, Huay Kaew, the moat), 40 baht on route A2 (Mahidol Road, Night Bazaar, Chang Khlan Road) and 60 baht on route A3 (Ring Road 2). The yellow and red lines of the Chiang Mai City Bus run from 06:00 to 23:30. AOT asks passengers to be at the airport at least two hours before departure; on an international flight, allow for passport control as well.
Luang Prabang International Airport is about 4 km from the old town, a 10 to 15 minute ride by taxi or tuk-tuk. Laos sets entry rules by nationality. The official Lao eVisa portal lets eligible travellers apply online in three steps: fill in the form, pay online, then download the approval sent by email. Check on the portal whether your passport qualifies and whether it covers arrival at Luang Prabang before you fly.
Both towns share the same climate pattern. November to February is cool and dry, with Chiang Mai evenings that can fall to about 10°C; this is the busiest time on the route. April is the hottest month, near 40°C in Chiang Mai, and the rainy season runs roughly from June to October.
There is no time difference: Thailand and Laos both use UTC+7 all year. Many travellers reach Chiang Mai through Bangkok first (see our Dhaka to Bangkok flights page for an example connection) and then use this flight to start the Laos part of the trip.
