Chiang Mai to Seoul flight guide
Korean Air, Jeju Air and Eastar Jet fly nonstop from Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) in northern Thailand to Incheon International Airport (ICN), Seoul's main airport, and Air Busan also serves Chiang Mai from Korea in winter. The 3,381 km flight takes about 4 hours 45 minutes and is popular with Korean holidaymakers and long-stay visitors returning home.
Fares are not like for like. Korean Air is a full-service airline and includes a checked bag and meals. Jeju Air, Eastar Jet and Air Busan are low-cost airlines whose basic fares cover a cabin bag only, with bags, seats and food as extras, so compare the total price.
Check where the Air Busan flight goes. Its winter 2026/27 Chiang Mai service, starting 25 October 2026, runs to Busan, not Seoul: flight BX538 leaves Chiang Mai at 23:40 and reaches Busan at 07:00 the next morning, on an Airbus A321. It flies four times a week, rising to six a week between 15 December 2026 and 28 February 2027. That suits travellers from the south-east of Korea who would otherwise connect through Incheon. T'way Air has also flown Seoul Incheon to Chiang Mai in recent winters, running daily with a Boeing 737-800 from 10 December 2025 to 2 March 2026, so the line-up of low-cost carriers changes from season to season.
Many Korea-bound flights leave Chiang Mai late in the evening and arrive early the next morning. The city bus stops at 23:30, so for a late departure book a taxi or Grab; most old-city and Nimman hotels are 15 to 20 minutes away. AOT, which runs Chiang Mai airport, lists flat-fare shuttle vans using Gate 12 of the international terminal: 40 baht on route A1 (Nimmanhaemin, Huay Kaew and the moat), 40 baht on route A2 (Mahidol Road, the Night Bazaar and Chang Khlan Road) and 60 baht on route A3 (Ring Road 2). The yellow and red lines of the Chiang Mai City Bus run from 06:00 to 23:30. AOT asks passengers to arrive at least two hours before departure, and international check-in closes well before take-off.
Incheon International Airport is on an island west of Seoul. Korean Air and its partners use Terminal 2, and most other airlines use Terminal 1. The AREX express train reaches Seoul Station in under an hour, the all-stop train is cheaper but slower, and limousine buses serve most districts.
Some visitors who can enter Korea without a visa need a K-ETA travel authorisation before boarding. Apply only on the official K-ETA website or app; the fee is KRW 10,000 and decisions generally come within 72 hours. Check whether your passport needs one, or whether it is covered by a temporary exemption.
Chiang Mai's cool season, November to February, overlaps with the Korean winter and is the busiest period on the route; Air Busan's added frequencies fall in exactly those months. Chiang Mai evenings can drop to about 10°C then. April is hot, up to about 40°C, and the rains run roughly from June to October.
Korea is two hours ahead of Thailand all year (UTC+9 against UTC+7). Travellers from elsewhere usually reach Chiang Mai via Bangkok; see our Dhaka to Bangkok flights page for one example of a connection.
