Flying from Chiang Mai to Bangkok

In short

From Chiang Mai you can land at either of Bangkok's airports. Multiple airlines fly to Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Nok Air and Thai Lion Air to Don Mueang (DMK), and Thai AirAsia serves both. The 596 km hop takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Leaving Chiang Mai is easy because the airport is almost in town. Chiang Mai International Airport is about 3 km from the Old City moat, so a taxi or Grab needs 10 to 20 minutes outside the evening rush. Domestic check-in is at the northern end of the single hall, and security is upstairs. Airports of Thailand suggests arriving two hours before departure; at weekends and around Thai holidays the queues justify that. If you are spending your last afternoon in the city, the AIRPORTELs left-luggage counter near Gate 7 holds bags until midnight.

Where you land matters more than the fare

Think about what happens after Bangkok. Suvarnabhumi is the hub for Thai Airways and for nearly all long-haul flights, and Thai Airways flies Chiang Mai to it 63 times a week this winter, 49 a week from 1 February 2027. Booking the domestic and international legs on one ticket keeps you in one terminal with your bags checked through. In town, the Airport Rail Link from the basement reaches Phaya Thai in about 26 minutes and connects with the BTS Skytrain.

Don Mueang is closer to north Bangkok and handles the low-cost carriers. Domestic arrivals come into Terminal 2. The SRT Red Line, across a footbridge, gets to Krung Thep Aphiwat in about 20 minutes, and airport buses A1 to A4 run towards Mo Chit, Victory Monument, Khao San Road and Lumphini. If your next flight is from the other airport, a free inter-airport shuttle runs for passengers with an onward ticket, but traffic can stretch the trip to two hours.

Hold bags and weighed cabin bags on low-cost fares

Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways include checked baggage in standard economy. Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai VietJet Air charge for hold bags on basic fares and weigh cabin bags at the gate, which catches out people heading home with shopping from the Night Bazaar.

Cheap ways to reach CNX

The Chiang Mai City Bus is the budget answer: its yellow and red routes run from 06:00 to 23:30 and stop at the airport after passing Tha Phae Gate, the Night Bazaar and Kad Suan Kaew. A red songthaew can be flagged anywhere in town and will run you out to the terminal for a negotiated price. Returning a hire car is simple, since the rental counters at the front of the terminal take keys back.

Getting between Bangkok's airports

The free airport shuttle between Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi runs from 05:00 to midnight and leaves Don Mueang from Gate 6 on the first floor of the international terminal; you need to show a flight ticket. Going the other way, minibus 555 from Suvarnabhumi's Public Transportation Center runs to Don Mueang between 06:30 and 20:00 for up to 60 baht.
