Myanmar Airways International (MAI) flies nonstop from Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) in northern Thailand to Mandalay International Airport (MDL) in central Myanmar. The 451 km flight takes about 1 hour 5 minutes and suits Myanmar nationals working or studying in northern Thailand, along with the few visitors heading to Mandalay and Bagan.
Myanmar Airways International is the only airline listed on the route. It is a full-service airline, so a checked bag is normally included in economy; check the allowance on your ticket. Muslim and other special meals can be requested at least 24 hours before departure.
MAI's changing Mandalay timetable and Myanmar advice
MAI added Chiang Mai to its network in April 2024, starting with flights from Yangon three times a week on a 95-seat Embraer E190. Its Mandalay service runs on a thinner pattern, and the timetable changes, so search your date before planning around it.

Gate 12 shuttle vans from the old city and Nimman
The airport sits just south-west of the old city. AOT, which runs it, lists shuttle vans at flat fares from Gate 12 of the international terminal: 40 baht on route A1 (Nimmanhaemin, Huay Kaew, the moat), 40 baht on route A2 (Mahidol Road, Night Bazaar, Chang Khlan Road) and 60 baht on route A3 (Ring Road 2). The Chiang Mai City Bus yellow and red lines run from 06:00 to 23:30, and taxis and Grab take 15 to 20 minutes from most hotels. AOT advises arriving at least two hours before departure; give yourself a little more for an international flight, since passport control comes after check-in.
Tada-U airport, an hour south of Mandalay
Mandalay International Airport is at Tada-U, roughly 45 km south of the city, so allow about an hour by taxi to central Mandalay. Arrange a pickup in advance if you land late in the day, and carry some local cash for the ride.
Mandalay weather and the 30-minute time shift
The cool season from November to February is the most comfortable time in both places; Chiang Mai evenings can drop to about 10°C. April is very hot, around 40°C in Chiang Mai, and the rains run roughly from June to October.
