Flying from Chiang Mai to Hanoi

In short

Thai AirAsia flies nonstop from Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) in northern Thailand to Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi. The 765 km flight takes about 1 hour 25 minutes, the quickest way between northern Thailand and northern Vietnam, and suits travellers on a regional loop as well as Vietnamese visitors heading home.

Thai AirAsia is the only airline on the route. It is a low-cost airline, so the basic fare covers a cabin bag only. Add checked baggage when you book, since it costs more at the airport, and pre-order food online if you want a meal.

Cheap van routes to the international terminal

The airport sits just south-west of the old city. AOT, which runs Chiang Mai airport, lists flat-fare shuttle vans using Gate 12 of the international terminal: 40 baht on route A1 (Nimmanhaemin, Huay Kaew and the moat), 40 baht on route A2 (Mahidol Road, the Night Bazaar and Chang Khlan Road) and 60 baht on route A3 (Ring Road 2). The yellow and red lines of the Chiang Mai City Bus run from 06:00 to 23:30. A taxi or Grab takes 15 to 20 minutes from most hotels, and red songthaews also serve the airport. HK Express's Chiang Mai guide notes that many hotels offer free airport transfers, so ask at reception. AOT recommends arriving at least two hours before departure; for an international flight, you also need time for passport control after check-in.

Noi Bai Terminal 2 and Vietnam's e-visa

Noi Bai International Airport is about 30 km north of Hanoi's Old Quarter, and international flights use Terminal 2. Taxis, Grab and the airport express bus run into the city in 45 minutes to an hour. Vietnam opened its e-visa to citizens of all countries in August 2023, and some nationalities can enter visa-free for short stays. Apply only through the official government portal and check the latest rules before you travel.

Dry, hot and rainy months in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is cool and dry from November to February, with evenings that can drop to about 10°C; it heats up to about 40°C from April, and the rains come roughly from June to October.

No time change, and Vietnam without backtracking

There is no time difference: Thailand and Vietnam both use UTC+7. Many travellers reach Chiang Mai through Bangkok (see our Dhaka to Bangkok flights page for one example of a connection) and then use this flight to start the Vietnam leg without going back south.
