Chiang Mai to Kuala Lumpur flight guide
Chiang Mai to Kuala Lumpur is a 1,806 km nonstop flight of about 2 hours 45 minutes from Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) in northern Thailand to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines fly it, which makes it the easy way out of the north for anyone heading to Malaysia or connecting onward through KLIA.
The airlines sell different products. Malaysia Airlines is full-service, so a checked bag and a meal are normally in the fare, and it flies to Terminal 1 at KLIA. AirAsia is low-cost: its basic fare covers a cabin bag, with checked baggage, seats and meals sold as extras, and it uses Terminal 2. Price the AirAsia ticket with the bag you plan to carry before comparing.
CNX sits just south-west of the old city, so the run out is short. Airports of Thailand lists two city bus lines, Yellow and Red, between 6 am and 11:30 pm; the Yellow line comes in via Tha Phae Gate and the Night Bazaar, the Red line via Suan Dok and MAYA mall. Red songthaews, the shared pickup trucks, also run to the airport, and a taxi or Grab from Nimman or the old city takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
The airport asks passengers to arrive at least two hours before departure, a sensible margin for an international flight once immigration queues are counted. Car rental desks sit on the first floor if you are dropping off a car.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport is in Sepang, about 45 km south of the city. The KLIA Ekspres train is the quickest link: it reaches KL Sentral in about 28 minutes from Terminal 1, with Terminal 2 three minutes further down the line. Trains run every 20 minutes, and the standard adult one-way fare is RM55. After 11 pm the train stops at all stations, and the last services leave the airport around 1 am.
Taxis and e-hailing cars are the alternative for late arrivals or groups. Batik Air Malaysia also flies to Subang (Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport), which is much closer to the city, though not on this route.
Foreign visitors must register the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online in the three days before arrival, at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my. Singapore citizens, diplomatic passport holders, Malaysian permanent residents and a few cross-border permit holders are exempt. The MDAC is separate from any visa; check the visa rule for your own passport on our Malaysia visa page before booking.
Leaving Thailand, you pass Thai emigration at CNX. Keep your passport handy as the airport's international hall is compact and queues build when several flights leave together.
Malaysia keeps UTC+8, one hour ahead of Thailand, with no daylight saving, so a mid-afternoon departure lands in the early evening by KL clocks.
The cool, dry months from November to February are peak season in Chiang Mai, and late February to April brings smoke haze from field burning in the north. Flights out of CNX fill around Songkran in April and the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng festivals in November, so book early for those dates.
KLIA is a large connecting hub for Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia, with flights across Asia and to Australia. If you are continuing on a separate ticket, collect your bags and check in again; allow at least three hours. Our Dhaka to Kuala Lumpur flights page covers one of the busiest South Asian links from KLIA, and the Dhaka to Bangkok flights page shows the main way into Thailand from that side.
