Flying from Phuket to Pattaya

In short

Flights from Phuket (HKT) to Pattaya land at U-Tapao (UTP), a joint civil and naval airport in Rayong province about 40 km by road south of central Pattaya. Bangkok Airways is the only airline on the route, flying about 587 km in roughly 1 hour 35 minutes. The alternative is to fly into Bangkok and drive down the coast, which takes the best part of a day.

Bangkok Airways flew the route through mid-2026, but we have not yet seen its full timetable for the 2026/27 winter season. Search your dates before you build a trip around it, and keep the Bangkok option in mind if your day is not offered.

Lounges and bags for the Phuket departure

The flight leaves from Phuket's Domestic Terminal at Mai Khao, 32 km from Phuket Town and about 38 km by road from Patong. Bangkok Airways passengers can wait in the airline's lounges in the Domestic Terminal before boarding. Standard economy on Bangkok Airways includes a checked bag, though cheaper promotional fares can carry tighter rules on changes.

Terminal 2 facilities at U-Tapao

U-Tapao Rayong-Pattaya International Airport began as a United States air base in the 1960s and is still run by the Royal Thai Navy. Passenger flights use Terminal 2, opened in 2019, with cafés, bank exchange counters, ATMs and AIS and True phone shops. Only one or two flights land at a time, so bags come through quickly.

Plan the onward ride before you land. A scheduled minibus runs to Big C South Pattaya only a few times a day; otherwise the airport's licensed taxi cooperative and fixed-price limousine counters cover Pattaya, Jomtien and Rayong, and a pre-booked car meets you in arrivals. Jomtien is a little closer than central Pattaya, and the drive takes 40 minutes to an hour depending on traffic and which end of the city you are heading for. U-Tapao is also handy for Ko Samet, via the pier at Ban Phe, and for Ko Chang, with door-to-door transfers sold in the terminal.

The best weather on the eastern seaboard runs from November to February, when it is drier and a little cooler. The rainy season lasts from about May to October.

A B-52 base built in 1965 and 1966

The United States built U-Tapao for B-52 bombers during the Vietnam War. Construction began on 15 October 1965 and the airfield opened on 2 June 1966. It is now a joint civil and military airport run by the Royal Thai Navy, home to the navy's First Air Wing. In November 2008, when protests closed Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, U-Tapao served for a time as a stand-in gateway for Bangkok.

The runway is 3,505 m long. Between October 2023 and September 2024 the airport handled 370,210 passengers, 142,704 of them on domestic flights. It lies about 140 km south of Suvarnabhumi and 190 km south of Don Mueang, and a high-speed rail line linking it with both Bangkok airports is under construction.

Bangkok Airways' U-Tapao routes

Bangkok Airways, which began as Sahakol Air in 1968, flies U-Tapao to Phuket and to Koh Samui. Its hubs are Suvarnabhumi and Samui, and its August 2025 fleet of 23 aircraft combined Airbus A319s, A320s and ATR 72-600s.

Phuket International Airport, where you board, handled 17,474,051 passengers in 2025 under Airports of Thailand. Domestic departures use Terminal 3, and the runway is 3,000 m long.
