Phuket to Chiang Mai flight guide
Phuket and Chiang Mai are about 1,187 km apart, and both airlines fly between them without a stop. The flight takes about two hours, which makes this the natural way to pair a week on the Andaman with a few days in the north.
The carriers suit different travellers. Bangkok Airways sells full-service economy, with a checked bag in its standard fares and snacks on board. Its Boutique Lounge in Phuket's Domestic Terminal is open to all Bangkok Airways passengers, including economy, which is a pleasant place to wait out a delay. Thai AirAsia is the low-cost option: the base fare covers a seat and a cabin bag, and checked bags are bought separately.
Both airlines fly from the Domestic Terminal, linked to the International Terminal by a five-minute covered walkway. The airport is at Mai Khao in the island's north-west, 38 km from Patong and further from Kata and Rawai, so leave the beaches early. Between November and April the terminals are busy and two hours at the airport is the minimum.
Chiang Mai International Airport is only 4 km from the city centre and about 3 km from the Old City moat. The airport taxi counter sells flat-fare rides to most addresses, and Grab and Bolt pick up outside Exit 2. In daytime the RTC city bus route 24 runs from the same exit, splitting into a loop towards the Night Bazaar and Tha Phae Gate (24L) and one towards Suan Dok and Nimman (24R). Expect 10 to 20 minutes to most hotels by car.
The best match for both places is November to February: dry season on Phuket's west coast and cool, clear days in Chiang Mai, with the Yi Peng lantern festival usually in November. From about February to April, smoke from fires across the north brings haze to Chiang Mai, and in the wet months from May to October the Andaman coast sees heavy rain and rough seas.
Phuket International Airport is run by Airports of Thailand and handled 17,474,051 passengers in 2025, more than 10.8 million of them international, up from 17,215,315 in 2024. Domestic flights use Terminal 3, international flights Terminal 2, and charter flights a separate Terminal X opened in February 2014. A single 3,000 m runway serves them all.
Chiang Mai International Airport is also an Airports of Thailand operation, on an airfield owned by the Royal Thai Air Force. It has run 24 hours a day since April 2014 and handled 9,517,206 passengers in 2025, 6.95 million of them domestic.
Bangkok Airways began in 1968 as Sahakol Air and adopted its present name in 1989. Its hubs are Suvarnabhumi and Koh Samui, where it built and still owns the airport, and in August 2025 it had 23 aircraft: Airbus A319s, Airbus A320s and ATR 72-600s. From Phuket it also flies to Suvarnabhumi, Hat Yai, Koh Samui and U-Tapao.
Thai AirAsia was founded in November 2003 and flew its first service in February 2004. Phuket and Chiang Mai are both among its seven operating bases, and from Phuket it also flies to Khon Kaen and Udon Thani. In August 2025 it had 62 Airbus aircraft, from 180-seat A320-200s to 236-seat A321neos, and it is about 55 percent owned by Thailand's Asia Aviation.

With a suitcase, Bangkok Airways' standard fare includes the bag. Thai AirAsia may still be cheaper once you add one, but compare the totals, not the headline prices.
Bangkok Airways lets every passenger, economy included, use its Boutique Lounge in Phuket's Domestic Terminal. It is a quiet spot with snacks and drinks before boarding.
The ride-hailing pick-up and the RTC bus stop are both outside Exit 2. The taxi counter inside arrivals is the simplest choice with heavy bags.
Phuket to Chiang Mai by bus takes the best part of two days with a change in Bangkok. The overnight train only covers the Bangkok to Chiang Mai half. Flying nonstop takes about two hours.

Getting there
Bangkok Airways and Thai AirAsia. Bangkok Airways is full-service, Thai AirAsia low-cost.
About two hours. The airports are roughly 1,187 km apart in a straight line.
The Domestic Terminal, for both airlines. It is a five-minute walk from the International Terminal along a covered walkway.
Bangkok Airways passengers can, in any class: the Boutique Lounge in the Domestic Terminal is open to all of them. Everyone else can buy a pass for one of the Coral lounges.
Use the taxi counter in arrivals, Grab or Bolt from outside Exit 2, or RTC bus route 24 in daytime. Most hotels are 10 to 20 minutes away by car.
About 3 km from the moat, one of the shortest airport rides in Thailand.
Occasionally. Heavy smoke from about February to April can cut visibility and cause delays, so leave some slack in your plans.
Kata is about 48 km from the airport, roughly an hour by car outside rush hour. Leave earlier in the late afternoon.
No. Phuket has no railway. You would need a bus to the mainland and the train from Bangkok, which takes far longer than the two-hour flight.
What's included
On Bangkok Airways' standard economy fares, yes. On Thai AirAsia's basic fares it is an extra, best added when you book.
Timing & weather
November to February. The north is cool and dry, Phuket is in its dry season too, and Chiang Mai's Yi Peng lantern festival usually falls in November.
