Flying from Phuket to Bangkok

In short

Leaving Phuket for Bangkok, the real deadline is the drive to the airport, not the flight. The island's airport is at Mai Khao in the far north-west, roughly an hour from Patong, Kata or Karon, and the 675 km flight itself takes only about 1 hour 20 minutes. Various airlines fly to Suvarnabhumi (BKK); two fly to Don Mueang (DMK); Thai AirAsia flies to both.

Taxis and the Smart Bus back to HKT

Allow at least an hour by taxi from the southern west coast beaches, and longer in the late afternoon or on wet days. The Smart Bus runs back up the coast from Rawai, Kata, Karon and Patong but stops often. Domestic flights depart from the Domestic Terminal at Phuket International Airport, a five-minute walk from the international building. Airports of Thailand advises two hours before departure, and the queues from November to April justify it. Bangkok Airways passengers can use the airline's lounges in the Domestic Terminal.

Suvarnabhumi for flights home with Thai Airways

If Bangkok is a stop on the way home, fly into Suvarnabhumi. It is where Thai Airways connects to its international network, and the airline runs 63 Phuket flights a week this winter. Thai AirAsia also flies there again since October 2026. From Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in about 26 minutes, and the Hyatt Regency is linked to the terminal by an underground walkway if you have a very early flight out.

If you are spending a few days in Bangkok, Don Mueang is fine and usually where the cheaper Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai AirAsia fares land. You arrive at Terminal 2, walk across to the SRT Red Line, and reach Krung Thep Aphiwat in about 20 minutes. Avoid booking a Don Mueang arrival with an international departure from Suvarnabhumi on the same day unless you leave several hours; the free shuttle between the airports can take up to two hours in traffic.

Bags on the way home

Holiday luggage tends to grow. Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways include a checked bag in standard economy, while the low-cost airlines charge for it and weigh cabin bags. Pay for extra weight online before the trip to the airport.

Airport Bus Express and Phuket Town bus times

There are two scheduled buses besides the Smart Bus. The Airport Bus Express leaves Patong Beach for the airport between 06:00 and 18:30, so an evening flight means a taxi. From Phuket Town, the hourly airport bus leaves the old bus station between 09:15 and 21:15, calling at Central, Boat Lagoon and Thalang on the way. Rental cars go back to the counter at the front of the terminal.

Getting into Bangkok cheaply

Suvarnabhumi's Public Transportation Center has city buses with low caps: 552 to On Nut on the BTS runs 05:00 to 22:00 for up to 29 baht, and S1 runs from the passenger terminal to Sanam Luang for 60 baht between 06:00 and 17:00. If you land at Don Mueang, buses A1 to A4 leave Gate 12 of the domestic terminal for 30 to 50 baht.
