Phuket to Kuala Lumpur flight guide
Phuket to Kuala Lumpur is a short nonstop flight of about 1 hour 25 minutes and 705 km from Phuket International Airport (HKT) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). Batik Air Malaysia and Malaysia Airlines fly it, linking Thailand's main beach island with Malaysia's capital and KLIA's long-haul connections.
Malaysia Airlines is full-service, so the fare normally includes a checked bag and a snack or meal. Batik Air Malaysia sells a lower base fare and charges for checked bags, meals and seat choice. On a flight under an hour and a half, the difference comes down to your luggage, so add bags to both quotes before comparing.
The airport is at the north of the island, about an hour from the southern beaches. Airports of Thailand lists the Airport Bus Express from Patong Beach via Kathu, leaving Patong between 6 am and 6:30 pm, and an hourly airport bus from the old bus station in Phuket Town between 9:15 am and 9:15 pm. The Phuket Smart Bus runs the west-coast beaches. For early flights, a taxi booked the night before is the safe bet.
If you are dropping off a hire car, the rental counters are on the first floor of the terminal. The Airports of Thailand call centre on 1722 can answer questions about buses and shuttles before you set out.
Check in at the international terminal, beside the domestic building, and allow time for Thai emigration.
KLIA is in Sepang, about 45 km south of Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia Airlines uses Terminal 1. The KLIA Ekspres train runs to KL Sentral every 20 minutes, taking about 28 minutes from Terminal 1, and the standard adult one-way fare is RM55. After 11 pm the trains stop at all stations, with the last ones leaving the airport around 1 am.
Taxis and e-hailing cars are the alternative, useful for groups or very late arrivals. Batik Air Malaysia also operates from Subang (Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport), much closer to the city, on some of its other routes.
All foreign citizens entering Malaysia must submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my in the three days before arrival. Singapore citizens, diplomatic passport holders, Malaysian permanent residents and a few cross-border permit holders are exempt. The MDAC sits alongside any visa you may need; check the rule for your passport on our Malaysia visa page.
Malaysia is one hour ahead of Thailand (UTC+8 against UTC+7), with no daylight saving on either side. A 90-minute flight therefore shows nearly two and a half hours between departure and arrival times.
Phuket's dry season runs from about November to April. Kuala Lumpur is hot and humid all year, with afternoon storms common.
KLIA is Malaysia Airlines' hub, with flights across Asia, to Australia and to Europe. On one ticket, bags go through; on separate tickets, collect them and check in again, allowing at least three hours.
For the return, the KLIA Ekspres from KL Sentral reaches Terminal 1 in about 28 minutes. Non-Thai nationals file the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online at tdac.immigration.go.th within three days before landing in Phuket, and Phuket's Airport Bus Express to Patong runs until 8 pm.
Our Dhaka to Kuala Lumpur flights page covers one busy South Asian route from KLIA, and the Dhaka to Bangkok flights page shows the main way into Thailand from that region.
