Juneyao Air is a full-service airline and normally includes a checked bag and a meal. Spring Airlines, also based in Shanghai, is a low-cost carrier that prices bags, seats and food separately. For a flight of almost five hours, check what you will pay for a suitcase and a meal before choosing on fare alone.
West-coast Smart Bus and the Patong airport express
The airport is at the island's northern end. AOT lists an Airport Bus Express from Patong Beach to the airport between 06:00 and 18:30 and an hourly airport bus from Phuket Town between 09:15 and 21:15. The Phuket Smart Bus serves the west-coast beaches, including Kata, Karon and Kamala, and minivans and taxis are always available. Late-night departures need a taxi or pre-booked car. Allow an hour or more from Patong or Kata, and arrive about three hours before departure.
Pudong by Maglev or Metro Line 2
Shanghai Pudong International Airport is about 30 km east of the city centre. The Maglev train reaches Longyang Road in about eight minutes, where you change to the metro, and Metro Line 2 also serves both terminals. China's entry rules depend on your passport. Some nationalities can enter visa-free or use visa-free transit, others need a visa in advance, so check with the Chinese embassy that covers your country.
Booking ahead of Chinese holidays
Demand from China peaks at holiday times. When Spring Airlines opened Shenzhen to Phuket in 2026, it went from three flights a week to daily between 29 September and 8 October, around the National Day holiday. Book early if your dates fall in a Chinese holiday week.

The Shanghai Maglev runs to Longyang Road in about eight minutes; from there, Metro Line 2 continues into the centre.
