The 1,952 km flight takes about 2 hours 55 minutes and suits Chinese visitors heading home and travellers planning a trip into Yunnan after the beach.
China Eastern Airlines is the only airline on the route. It is a full-service airline, so a checked bag and a meal are normally part of the fare; the allowance on your ticket is what applies. Muslim and other special meals can be requested at least 24 hours before departure.
AOT buses from the southern beaches to the airport
The airport is at the northern end of the island, and the main beaches are a long way south. AOT lists an Airport Bus Express from Patong Beach to the airport between 06:00 and 18:30, and an hourly airport bus from Phuket Town between 09:15 and 21:15. The Phuket Smart Bus runs along the west coast via Kata, Karon and Kamala, and public minivans and taxis fill the gaps. Plan on at least an hour by road from Patong or Kata, and arrive about three hours before an international departure.
Changshui airport, Metro Line 6 and China entry
Kunming Changshui International Airport is about 25 km north-east of the city. Metro Line 6 links the airport with the city, and taxis queue at arrivals. Kunming is known as the spring city for its mild climate.
China's entry rules depend on your passport. Some nationalities can enter without a visa or use visa-free transit, while others need a visa issued in advance, so check with the Chinese embassy that covers your country before booking.
Kunming's one-hour lead and South Asia links
Kunming is one hour ahead of Thailand all year (UTC+8 against UTC+7). Travellers from further west often reach Phuket through Bangkok (see our Dhaka to Bangkok flights page for one example), and Kunming has its own direct links into South Asia, such as Dhaka to Kunming flights, which makes an open-jaw trip possible.
