Flying from Phuket to Koh Samui

In short

Getting from Phuket (HKT) to Koh Samui (USM) by air means flying Bangkok Airways, the only airline on the nonstop route. The hop covers about 249 km across the peninsula and takes roughly 55 minutes, which turns a coast-to-coast trip that fills a day by road and ferry into a morning's travel.

Plenty of travellers use it to split a holiday between the two seas, and the timing can work in your favour. The Andaman side around Phuket is at its best from November to April, while Samui, on the Gulf, gets its heaviest rain from about October to December and is usually drier through the first half of the year. Start in Phuket early in the year and you will often find Samui in good shape when you arrive.

What Bangkok Airways includes

Bangkok Airways sells itself as a boutique airline, and standard economy fares include a checked bag, unlike the low-cost carriers on most Thai domestic routes. In Phuket's Domestic Terminal the airline runs its own lounges, and at Samui its courtesy corners serve free snacks and drinks to every passenger on the way out. Check the fare conditions before you pay, as the cheapest fares can carry stricter change rules.

Open-air pavilions and a tram at Samui airport

Samui International Airport is unlike any other airport in Thailand. Bangkok Airways built it, opened it in 1989 and still owns and runs it, and the terminals are thatched, open-sided pavilions set in gardens. An open-sided tram usually brings you from the aircraft. The airport is in Bo Phut, about 2 km from the northern end of Chaweng, so most hotels are close.

There is no rail link or scheduled airport bus. Taxis are sold at a counter in arrivals at fixed prices by zone rather than by meter, with Bophut and Chaweng the cheapest zones; shared minibuses cost less per person but stop at several hotels. Grab also works on the island, though the app may send you to a pickup point on the main road. Carrying on to Koh Phangan? Boats leave from Big Buddha Pier, a few minutes from the terminal.

Allowing time from Patong and Kata to Mai Khao

Fly from Phuket's Domestic Terminal at Mai Khao, at the northern end of the island. Patong is about 38 km away by road and Kata about 48 km, so allow an hour or more from the southern beaches, plus two hours at the airport in high season.

The airline and its airport

Bangkok Airways was founded as Sahakol Air in 1968 and has carried its current name since 1989, the same year it opened Samui's airport. Work on the airport started in 1982. Bangkok Airways also owns the airports at Sukhothai and Trat, and its hubs are Suvarnabhumi and Samui.

The airline's 23 aircraft in August 2025 were Airbus A319s, Airbus A320s and ATR 72-600s. From Samui it flies to both Bangkok airports, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Phuket and U-Tapao, and abroad to Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Samui's runway is 2,100 m long, and the international terminal stands about 50 m north of the domestic one. High-speed ferries to Koh Tao and Chumphon leave from Maenam Beach Pier, about 6 km north-west of the airport.

Phuket's Terminal 3 and Bangkok Airways routes

Airports of Thailand handled 17,474,051 passengers at Phuket in 2025, 6,636,760 of them domestic. Bangkok Airways flights leave from Terminal 3, the domestic building; Terminal 2 is international and Terminal X serves charters. From Phuket, the airline also flies to Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and U-Tapao.
