Flying from Bangkok to Yangon

In short

Several airlines fly nonstop from Bangkok to Yangon International Airport (RGN) in Myanmar: Myanmar Airways International, Myanmar National Airlines, Thai Airways International and Thai AirAsia. The 611 km hop takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, which makes Bangkok the main air gateway to Myanmar's largest city for business travellers, families and visitors heading on to Bagan or Inle.

Several airlines from Suvarnabhumi, two from Don Mueang

A number of airlines depart from Suvarnabhumi (BKK), and Don Mueang (DMK) has Myanmar Airways International and Thai AirAsia. Thai AirAsia is low-cost: the base fare covers a cabin bag, and hold luggage, food and seat selection are extra. The full-service airlines include a checked bag, with the exact allowance shown on the booking.

Because the flight is so short, the airport you leave from can matter more than the airline. Don Mueang suits travellers staying near Chatuchak or the northern districts, and Suvarnabhumi suits Sukhumvit and the east.

SAT-1 train and the Don Mueang bus options

For Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link runs from Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes; Makkasan has a link to the MRT Blue Line. Gates in the SAT-1 satellite concourse are reached by an automated train under the apron, a ride of about three minutes.

For Don Mueang, the A1 bus leaves Mo Chit 2 and BTS Chatuchak and the A2 leaves Victory Monument, both for 30 baht. The SRT Red Line also reaches the airport from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, where it connects with the MRT Blue Line; trains run from about 05:00 to 23:45.

Single-entry eVisa through Yangon airport

Most foreign visitors need a tourist eVisa from the official Myanmar eVisa site, and Yangon International Airport is an approved port of entry. The eVisa gives a single entry and a stay of up to 28 days from arrival. Apply at least three working days ahead; the approval letter is valid for 90 days from issue and is useless after that.

Carry a passport with six months of validity, a return ticket and a hotel booking. Tourists must stay in registered accommodation such as hotels, guesthouses and licensed resorts. Fees are not refundable.

Mingaladon to downtown Yangon by taxi

Yangon International Airport is in Mingaladon, about 15 km north of downtown. Taxis wait outside arrivals, and the drive takes 45 minutes or more in traffic, longer in the afternoon peak. Changing a little money at the airport helps with the first fare.

Unsettled since 2021, and a half-hour time gap

Myanmar's situation has been unsettled since 2021 and some regions are affected by conflict. Check your government's travel advice and the latest entry rules shortly before you fly.

Yangon keeps UTC+6:30, half an hour behind Bangkok, with no daylight saving on either side. A morning departure therefore lands only 45 minutes later by the local clock.

Dhaka arrivals and the Yangon departures share Suvarnabhumi

Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways fly into Suvarnabhumi (see our Dhaka to Bangkok flights page), where the Myanmar Airways International, Myanmar National Airlines and Thai Airways departures also leave. A Don Mueang flight means crossing the city and checking in again, so leave at least four hours. On two separate tickets you clear Thai immigration, which requires permission to enter Thailand and a completed Thailand Digital Arrival Card.
